Just attended a coaching on "Making Good Decisions" for academics. After 60min of "don't be too perfectionist", "just think about the next step", "be more compassionate with yourself", we started discussing where all this pressure is coming from, and someone asked "isn't the whole system broken, then?" and I asked "should we actually stop trying to fix our mental health and BURN THE WHOLE F**KING PLACE DOWN?" and the coach went: "Of course, that would actually be healthier". 🤡

Somehow I missed this trend: When did trivial medical romance become trivial romance?

Dieser Trend ist irgendwie an mir vorbeigegangen: Wann wurde aus dem trivialen Arztroman der triviale :in-Roman?

@linguistics while (re)reading Pratchett I have developed the strong feeling that when one of the characters says "our Nellie" or "our Jason", the effect is similar to Northern Italian "la Agnese" o "il Gianni" - that is, a colloquialism when referring to a common acquaintance, not necessarily a family member.
Can somebody who speaks both confirm or deny this?

@alischinsky @pneumaculturist @pgcd @linguistics @anathema_device ... aaaand is common in Southern German.

For those who've built/found community here, what are the tools you find most effective in building community and being "findable" by others in your field, identity group, region, etc? @academicchatter

@sharan @ml @academicchatter Find some really quirky people to follow (e.g., @lisamelton), and each time they boost something that tickles you, follow the person who tooted it.

@islieb Zieh nach Hannover! Hannover ist das „Paradies des Mittelstandes, der Bemittelten und jeder Mittelmäßigkeit“, so spottete Theodor Lessing, selbst gebürtiger Hannover, in den 1930er Jahren.

@zenforyen @academicchatter You SO hit the nail on the head. I had a decent PhD supervisor (who never put his name on my papers when he hadn't written substantial parts himself) but when I looked into PostDoc positions, it was KPIs everywhere. I got disgusted and left academia for an academia-adjacent domain. Then that domain got invaded by the same utterly destructive and toxic crap. This is not how I want to be measured as a scientist. This is not how I would want to do science!

@danai @academicchatter That is interesting. Everybody has their preferences but that was a thing I was profoundly disgusted by over at the birdsite, and I am so happy it doesn't happen here.

SemAntiKast,
@SemAntiKast@openbiblio.social avatar

@renordquist @Namnezia @academicchatter @danai Yeah, I guess that has something to do with it. It's like with the too perfect images on Instagram – it shifts the standard for the rest of us and doesn't give the full picture.
I also think I have a problem with it because of the toxic culture in academia right now where you can only survive if you fulfil the key performance indicator of "how many papers at A+ conferences" but the game is rigged to begin with in terms of diversity, for example.

SemAntiKast,
@SemAntiKast@openbiblio.social avatar

@renordquist @Namnezia @academicchatter @danai That disregards all the other wonderful ways someone can be a great scientist, and so no, I don't want to read posts by the umpteenth privileged guy who is "so honoured to have received this Best Paper Award" as long as he doesn't acknowledge the giants whose shoulders he's standing on (and that is what I had experienced on Twitter).
I would love to see posts "here is a really interesting paper", though. Make it about the content, not the person.

@ninokadic @academicchatter I am a little sad that I so rarely get to use it. I know, it is frowned upon and considered pretentious and so on, but getting my Dr. is absolutely the event I identify with most in my life. Also has something to do with my family history. Why do I have to hide it all the time ... ?

A few days ago I suggested that a conference be hybrid, but it seems that nobody supports these things anymore...

I understand that it is technically complex (well, for us a little less, since we are computer scientists), but I feel that this is the only ethical way to do things. Hybrid events are good for climate change, they allow people with little budget or health problems to participate, etc.

It's a shame there are virtually no hybrid events anymore, not even among the top conferences 😞

SemAntiKast,
@SemAntiKast@openbiblio.social avatar

@bookmarchitect @HannahCelsius @the_heruman @UlrichJunker @gpollara @academicchatter @FMarquardtGroup I am also a conference organizer, and there is another problem: At least in my country, people do not get funding to travel if there is also the possibility to participate remotely. How do we deal with that?
