Global investment firms buying up local properties are hurting Atlanta families – especially Black ones.
Brian Y. An of Georgia Institute of Technology writes:
“In the Atlanta metro area, these [Wall Street] firms own nearly one-third of all single-family rental properties. They’re even more concentrated in predominantly Black neighborhoods, where more than 10 houses in a row can be owned by the same corporation.”
Housing and employment precarity is incredibly politically useful.
A common strategy is to announce massive real estate developments near elections, displacing just enough residents & voters to throw an election to the GOP.
Gentrification is a disenfranchisement scheme no different than abortion & LGBTQ+ civil rights, gerrymandering, poll register purging, or voter suppression.
Holy shit. Univision, the nation's largest Spanish-language network, has decided to cancel ad-buys by the #Biden campaign in Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, & Florida after #Trump met with their executives last week. Our media continues to fail us. This is how our democracy dies.
The media is finally starting to report Trump’s statements for what they are: Fascist. He’s using Hitler’s own words about “vermin” and immigrants “poisoning the blood” of Americans. He’s calling for mass detention of migrants and threatening to come after his political enemies and seek retribution if re-elected. He must never be. America’s future is on the line. We all must do our part and vote.
This is why we should never “ignore” or turn away from #Trump. He’s a real and present danger. (That doesn’t mean we should post his rants, regurgitate his words without context and major pushback. It only means don’t pretend this isn’t happening. Confront it and end it.)
Someone asked me what I think is going on with Trump's lawyers attacking the clerk.
Yesterday I said this:
"It's hard to tell what is going on with that. My best guess is that Trump's lawyers are fatigued, know they are losing, and are getting weird and paranoid."
Judge Engoron, who sees it all up close, said there is misogyny.
I just saw a picture of the clerk and I have revised my opinion.
Today in Labor History September 30, 1892: In the wake of the Homestead Steel Strike, union leaders were prosecuted for the crime of treason for the first time in U.S. history. Henry C. Frick, chairman of the Carnegie Steel Company, convinced the chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to issue warrants for the arrests of every member of the advisory board of the striking steel union for treason against the state. The 29 strike leaders were ultimately charged with plotting "to incite insurrection, rebellion & war against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania." During the strike, Pinkerton detectives killed seven workers, who were protesting wage cuts of 18-26%. Alexander Berkman tried to assassinate Frick, but failed, and spent many years in prison. He wrote about his imprisonment, and about anarchism, in his “Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist,” published by Emma Goldman’s Mother Earth Press.
Carnegie, like many other Gilded Age anti-democracy billionaires, hated unions yet successfully whitewashed his legacy using "philanthropic" bequests.
Today's billionaires whitewash their anti-democracy efforts using the same techniques, "philanthropic" think tanks to harbor a Leonard Leo or a John Eastman.
I still don't understand how think tanks can orchestrate a seditious conspiracy using the money of long dead billionaires,.... AND get a tax subsidy to do so.
Republican billionaire donors want to bring back the worst parts of the 19th century.
Income inequality. Women without rights or the vote. PoC "back in their place". Police to put down worker rebellions. Slavery. Industrial pollution. Food adulteration. Water contamination. Pandemics. Civil War. Vigilante violence. No taxes for the rich. No civil rights. Workhouses. Poverty striken tenements. Neglected & starving children.
There's a GOP donor promoting these social policies now.
I just had to update my numbers for a lecture, so here's your periodic reminder: Starlink is now 55% of ALL active satellites in orbit.
And given the recent news about that awful billionaire unilaterally deciding to cut of Starlink internet access to parts of the world whenever he wants to, this is extra important to share. Why did our governments effectively gift Low Earth Orbit to one awful dude? This is so bad.
Can we trust the data on climate change provided by his satellites?
Can we trust he isn't copying data streams on military operations over to Putin, Alwaleed bin Talal, Larry Ellison, or Mohammed bin Salman and his other investors?
Can we trust that the products he developed using government subsidies & taxpayer funded research will benefit the planet & democracy?
We should have long memories for folks who betray the nation
Following a Saudi man being sentenced to death for criticizing the Saudi government on two anonymous Twitter accounts with a total of ten followers, Elon Musk clarifies that his offer to fund users’ legal bills if one is unfairly treated due to posting or liking on the platform does not extend to disputes with the world’s leading importer of bone saws (i.e. Twitter’s second-largest shareholder).
Being an admin of a large-ish instance has been quite an eye opening experience into how awful some people are towards trans people. I really don’t understand the energy they put into hating people.
