This is how it works for many, many businesses. Before you agree to a lease for a coffee shop you make sure that no one else is going to be able to open a coffee shop in the same area. This is how commercial leases work.

Despite warnings that these policies could be weaponized by their political opponents to hurt their standing among more moderate voters, a strong majority of the delegates on hand voted for a motion that stated children should be prohibited from gender-related “life-altering medicinal or surgical interventions,” and for another that said Canadians should have “bodily autonomy” when it comes to vaccines and other health treatments.

Christofascist virtue signaling.

New footage from police body cams, drones shows how officers were overwhelmed during 'Freedom Convoy' protests in Ottawa (www.ctvnews.ca)

As the criminal trial of 'Freedom Convoy' leaders Tamara Lich and Chris Barber continues, the Crown has released never-before-seen video evidence showing what the occupation of the nation's capital was like from the police perspective.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t think you’re listening to the testimony, reading the transcript, or watching any of the new videos (or reading the articles, really.) The OPS knew they were coming but didn’t realize how many locals were going to throw in with the protesters. They assumed that it was going to be just another protest that would evaporate on Monday. They were unprepared for how many people would be there and just how lawless and uncooperative they would be.

The Toronto police reacted the way they did because they saw what happened in Ottawa.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Your beliefs do not align with the findings of the commission.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

The world isn’t black and white and not all cops lie. Their testimony lines up with what happened in Ottawa and with the findings of the commission so that lends credibility to what they are saying. There were a couple of thousand cops on the ground who did a professional job and cleared the occupiers with no injuries or deaths.

Comparing anything that is happening that falls short of the systematic murder of more that 10 million people to the systematic murder of 10 million people is going to get you in trouble. This hateful asshole said the quiet part out loud and is now suffering the consequences of her actions. She should have been dismissed immediately.

The people who complain about Canada often hold the US up as an example of what Canada should be because they can have guns, have hate speech, and are free to discriminate against people they hate

MapleEngineer,

First world problems.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Yes, there are problems. Yes, people have legitimate concerns. I just can’t tolerate the, “Canada is a dictatorship” nonsense, or, “Canada is turning into a third world country,” or our white bread, milquetoast right of center Prime Minister and his father are Marxists. People need some perspective.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m a socialist who had spent time in truly horrible places. I have perspective. Canada has problems, yes, but they are first world problems.

MapleEngineer, (edited )
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Canada also kept slaves 150 years ago.

How many of the people pissing and moaning on Lemmy have experienced any of those things?

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

2nd out of 204.

Would you love your child less if they came in 2nd? I sure as fuck wouldn’t.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t dismiss the legitimate complaints of people who live in Canada. There are problems. I’ve said that repeatedly throughout these comments. What I’m saying is that Canada isn’t any of the things the neo-Nazis and the tankies say it is. It isn’t a dictatorship. It isn’t turning into a third world shithole. Our Prime Minister isn’t a Marxist and neither was his father. Canada is a great country and a great place to live. Wealth inequality is a big fucking problem. Corruption is a big fucking problem. The erosion of workers rights is a big fucking problem. Capitalism has run its course and it’s time for a change. That doesn’t mean that Canada is a bad place to live and the people who say it is is are entitled, whiney idiots.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Those things should be enough evidence to say that we aren’t the second best country in the world.

And yet…they aren’t. Canada ranks very high in quality of life, personal and religious freedom, and many other measures. There are problems, yes, but they are problems effecting the second best country in the world to live in. People living other places are dying to come here.

Perspective.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

The best countries in the world are at the top of the list. There are 204 countries on the list.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

I just disagree that it is the 2nd best country in the world to live in. Where it accurately lands I cannot say, but #2 is not it. And that’s okay. I still love this country.

I do as well. I think it’s the best country in the world to live in. I’ve been lots of places, many high on that list and many very low on that list, and I would not choose to live in any of them instead of Canada.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

So who are you voting for next election?

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

We need an electoral system that doesn’t take power from a large party that most people voted for and give it to a tiny fringe party that almost none voted for. Look at what’s happening in Israel. The most extreme party to get any seats is calling the shots because they hold the balance of power. Wouldn’t Canada be fun if the christofascists or tankies were calling the shots?

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m about to shake your world. Ready?

What you believe doesn’t change reality. Your feelings don’t matter.

Sorry.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m not sure that it was the media that did that. I suspect that it was the alt-right media (“alt” being their preferred pronoun instead of the more accurate “extreme”).

And…who is father is only matters to the right. No one else gives a shit about what other people are doing in the privacy of their own bedrooms.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Canada has been in the top two or three for a very long time. Someone challenged that the rest of the world was falling and Canada was probably way lower in 2016. I went back and checked and we were number 2 in 2016 as well.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

You believe it’s bullshit.

What you believe doesn’t change reality. The report is as the report is, the metrics are all there, and whether you believe it or not makes absolutely zero difference.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

What you believe doesn’t change reality.

MapleEngineer,

Not even close to the same metrics but if it makes your fee fees happy then you do you.

Whatever you have to tell yourself, dude.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Yay! You’ll never respond to anything else that I ever write!

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Sorry…you’ve bored me. There are YouTube videos calling to me.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

This seems really important to you. It isn’t to me.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

I saw some right wing idiot say it and thought it was funny. A delicate snowflake blocked me so I won’t have to listen to his incessant whining about my comments anymore so I call that a win.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Yup. They fucking hate it when you throw their bullshit back at them.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Did everyone from Hexbear and Lemmygrad move to lemm.ee? I notice that that’s where most of the anti-Canadian hate is coming from. Was there a brigade message sent out or is this just organic?

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

I love Canada and know how good we have it. I don’t give two shits what a bunch of anti-Canadian propagandist trolls have to say.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

They’re among the safest, cleanest cities in the world.

MapleEngineer, (edited )
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Ah…the classic, “No you are!” gambit. Well played! Well played indeed.

Most of these people spreading the anti-Canadian hate are making a classic mistake of ego. “Canada is bad for me therefore Canada is bad.” It’s the same mistake that incels make. Some people have more than me so they are bad and the system is bad and the country is BAD.

EDIT: Brigades on Lemmy have no power. No one gives a shit about Karma here. You can’t silence voices you don’t like. Go ahead, downvote. No one fucking cares.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Ah…I missed the last second “you”. My apologies.

I stand by the rest of my comments.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Gaslighting

Does that ever work or do most or just laugh at you?

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

At least I didn’t try to gaslight anyone. That’s just sad.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Gaslighting is the act of trying to convince someone that they are crazy. In its simplest form telling someone who is not crazy that they are crazy is gaslighting.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Very positive message.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Myriam Webster says that it can include questioning your mental health. A single instance is just the first of several.

You may be right, though. It doesn’t matter in the end, the commenter was just an ass.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

He said according to the contract, staff are expected to “refrain from practices which are condemned by God in the Bible,” including “homosexual behaviour.”

I wonder if they include wearing clothing of mixed fibers and boiling a goat in the milk of its mother in their rules or if its just their own twisted hatred that they enforce? Fucking cafeteria christofascists.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Yup.
