A cautionary tale for Canada (www.theguardian.com)

An interesting article about the extreme right in the US and how they are not interested in governing or working for the people but are focused instead on tearing apart the US government, taking away rights and freedoms, and turning the country into a christofascist dictatorship with oligarchs in charge....

That’s because everything would be boiled if it came from England.

EDIT: To the humorless asshole who are pissing and moaning about this comment I was playing into the comment from the OC. I’ve spent considerable time in England eating delicious non-boiled food. England does have a reputation for boiling every ounce of flavour and joy out of their food but, like every other stereotype, it is based in reality but not reflective of reality.

Fucking delicious prison slop.

I’ve eaten prison food (I worked for CSC for 22 years.) They would kill for home cooked food like this.

I’m sorry your world is so devoid of joy.

Well, there is this.

Swinging to the extreme right is not a winning strategy in Canada.

You only have to look as far as is going on in the US house of representatives to know the chaos a few extremists can cause. They will never be satisfied until the province is a christofascist dictatorship.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

How absurdly reductive.

It’s not about, “word use”, it’s about protecting the most vulnerable of our children.

Stop trolling, we see right through your reductive nonsense.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Or Harper’s Barbaric Cultural Practice snitch line.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

These stories always strike me as listening to a bunch of children make a fantastic plan. They never consider and obstacles or of ramps. Their plan always goes perfectly.

These people never considered the fact that they are a bunch of gap toothed yokels, not the supreme race they imagine themselves to be. They never consider the fact that professional police officers will wipe the ground with them. They never consider the fact that the government has access to tens of thousands of police officers and can bring in the military and that they aren’t just going to roll over and allow these christofascist asshays establish a dictatorship in Canada.

Or that many smarter, more capable, and more heavily armed Canadians will fight back.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

My hope is that people are waking up to the fact that our domestic christofascist extremists are following in the footsteps of the US MAGA crowd and will kick their extremist asses back into the shadows. Higgs clearly thinks he’s a dictator. It’s obvious now that Doug Ford talks a big game about working for the little guy but everything he does is a scheme to enrich his wealthy developer/donor friends. Heather Stefanson in Manitoba trying the, “Vote like an intolerant asshole while no one is watching.” gambit blew up in her fucking face. These right wing extremists are spending so much time virtue signaling while the people of their provinces can’t afford groceries. During tough economic times electing governments that cut taxes to enrich their friends, cut services that the rest of us rely on to get by, and neglecting education, healthcare, and infrastructure to “save money” are NOT what we need.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Alberta and BC have Recall acts on the books. Other than those two provinces you need a confidence vote called by the party in power and a majority to vote against it. Once we elect them, we’re stuck with them. That’s why I think that protest votes to remove a reasonable but irritating party and replace it with a christofascist party is not a good move. We’re stuck with them for years and they can do us a LOT of harm during that period.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

The reality is that the vast majority of Candians are socially progressive. On every issue from abortion to gun control to LGBTQ rights to social programs Candians lean left to hard left. As these right wing parties swing harder and harder right they appeal to a smaller and smaller extreme voting block. At some point they squeeze themselves out. Especially, like in Ontario, when it becomes so absolutely and undeniably obvious that all of Doug Ford’s talk of helping the little guy is just a series of schemes to enrich a small group of his wealthy developer friends/donors and when the social policies in places like Alberskatchetoba become so obviously about christofascist virtue signaling at the expense of extremely vulnerable children to appeal to fanatical extremists.

What Canada needs is socially progressive leadership that is not corrupt, that makes corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share (not everything, not a lot more, but their fair share), that reaoects workers and parents and everyone’s rights, and that is fiscally responsible (not cutting revenue by cutting taxes on the wealthy and cutting programs that we have already paid for for everyone else to pay for it but trying to run the country/province within our means as much as possible while still truly caring for the ALL of the people, not just the wealthy.)

Is that too much to ask for?

The Candian government has done this for years. Drug prices in Canada are often a fraction of what they cost in the US.

The drug companies swore that they would stop selling drugs in Canada if they weren’t allowed to set prices in Canada as high at possible buy they’re so fucking greedy that they will take $5 of profit instead of $1,000 and instead of withdrawing from the market and making $0.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Yes, and they aren’t allowed to raise the price of a drug unless they can show a proportionate increase in the benefit to the patient.

MapleEngineer,

Air Canada isn’t an airline. It’s a giant corporation whose main business is extracting subsidies from the federal government. It pretends to be an airline to do that. That’s why it treats its passengers like an inconvenient annoyance.

Premier Smith says Alberta preparing Sovereignty Act motion over federal emissions plans (www.cbc.ca)

Hours after the operators of the province’s power grid warned that new federal electricity regulations could lead to blackouts, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said her government is preparing for the possibility of enacting her signature legislation in an effort to push back against Ottawa’s planned emissions reductions....

The Notwithstanding Clause is an admission that what they are doing is an unconstitutional christofascist virtue signaling attack on a vulnerable minority.

Fuck all christofascists. Get out and vote these assholes out the next chance you get.

Do your crime in Ottawa, face trial in Ottawa.

This is the way.

Anber argued a potential jury pool could be prejudiced from “the animosity fomented by local politicians and the media; the formal position of the City of Ottawa; the civil (lawsuit);…

Or the thousands of people who were tortured, harassed, intimidated, threatened, put out of work, and forced to deal human shit all over the street and diesel fumes for weeks?

There is a 100% sure way to assure that you don’t get an unfair trial for a crime that you committed. Don’t commit the fucking crime

I always forget about the fucking pedants.

I’ve updated my statement.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Yes, thanks for jogging my memory. I would have just ignored you and let my comment stand but I got to get the dig in about being a pedant so I figured I owed it to you since you were technically right which any pedant will tell you is the best kind of right.

One of my favourite jokes for pedants.

What’s blue, hangs on the wall, and whistles?

Pedant: I don’t know, what’s blue, hangs on the wall, and whistles?

A herring.

Pedant: But a herring isn’t blue.

So you paint blue.

Pedant: But a herring doesn’t hang on the wall!

So you nail it to the wall.

Pedant: BUT A HERRING DOESN’T WHISTLE!!!

So a herring doesn’t whistle. It’s a joke!

The answers you seek are in the article, and the ruling.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

In my experience you’re not interested in a conversation, just making circular, pedantic, bad faith arguments. I’m not interested in that kind of conversation.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t think you should be able to go to Singapore and commit drug crimes then expect to be tried in Canada and I don’t think you should be able to come to Ottawa and torture, harass, threaten, intimidate, and put out of work tens of thousands of citizens then expect to be tried somewhere else.

Can’t wait to hear why this is, “TrUdEaU bAd!”

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

Something like that, I’m sure.

MapleEngineer,
@MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca avatar

No, I’m observing that that Trudeau could solve world hunger and bring about world peace and there are still people who would find a way to say, “TrUdEaU bAd!”
