What does Autistic Masking/Camoflaging mean to YOU?

Not what the definition is. Not what people on social media say. We say that all humans are different. Masking fits into that too.

Some of us can’t mask btw.

For me it's pretending to enjoy social évents when I'd rather be dead. Even good friends' birthdays (or mine) where I'd like to be able to show joy but need energy to avoid fleeing.
Also not exploding when my mother suggests I eat an an anxiolytic before a family gathering because "we know you don't like it, but we love to have you at this event"
I stopped dressing "professional" years ago, and since my burnout it'll be jeans and t-shirts or I'll be away

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic for me, if I HAVE to do it, it's music in the ears + make sure I have more than enough book(s) to read + a window seat. A scrap book and some pencils can also help.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic AND make sure I'm WAAAAAYYYY early for check-in, so that I can relax and make sure there's no way I can miss a deadline. Too costly otherwise, as happened in Lisbon when I wanted to get as much time as possible visiting the city with my camera and paid a huge price in anxiety later

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic that was around 45y.o. after discovering a colleague had a blog about autism. It dawned on me that my "weirdness" was not my fault but a condition I had to live with. Since then my life has improved as I can take this into account. Currently looking for a formal diag, as a step on my path to burnout recovery.

@joshsusser @actuallyautistic I replied "difficult but I'm coping" as I'm recivering from a burnout, but my close family is very supportive and I have no immediate risks for my situation.

@dukeoffailure @actuallyautistic for me it's a combination. Nature is always a huge thing for me (still wondering why I never got a job there), boats also, as well as B&W photo. The rest comes and goes, there has been trains, computers, electronics...
