I understand why they don’t want links to GFR, they are a a clickbaity source with little real content, but banning you for questioning it is a bit far, a simple explanation would suffice (“hey, sorry you’re upset, here’s why it was removed, have a nice day” with a polite explanation of their stance of GFR and others like them) and we would all just say “oh ok, fair enough”, you would edit your post to say it was all good just a misunderstanding and we would all move on.
I know that on /r/startrek that source was in the automods blacklist so I can understand removing it, but the ban was way out of line when a conversation was possible and very, very easily resolved.
I also got a PM from that particular mod which rubs me the wrong way. if they want to explain their stance, they need to do it in a post to the whole community so we can talk about it, this place is supposed to offer a new start for a startrek community forum and that should start with a conversation between the users and the mods on how we all want it to work, not bans and pms to anyone who questions them.

Hey guys, I’ve used plex in my home for a while but decided to share my collection with a friend. It seems that even when I can get plex to do a direct stream, it still transcodes the audio and he only gets 7.1 channel audio instead of dolby atmos....
Even if the client supports Atmos, there are more variables.
Is it connected directly to a receiver or is it to the TV then ARC out ? some atmos can work through that but only compressed EAC3 atmos over E-ARC, not super reliable and depends on the TV and sound system.
If it’s a built in app, most of them have no atmos support what so ever, though I think EAC3 atmos is supported on a couple of platforms, and only EAC3 compressed atmos, and in those cases it may be apps like netflix, prime, disney etc only, not third party apps like plex.
probably just a bit of safety there, it is a more carefully controlled and moderated experience.
You drop the average internet user into the wrong random lemmy instance without teaching them how to tune it to their liking and they are going to be turned off by the amount of bizzare shit they see and just assume it’s all like that.

I had no idea of the size and variety of the Fediverse! It has me feeling a bit overwhelmed. I'm enjoying BookWyrm very much; it's the GoodReads/LibraryThing replacement I've been looking for for years....
I am looking for something I can run on a Pi that gives me access to my private audio library plus Spotify, because I hate switching apps. I want to access it from a desktop and Android. Does someone have something like this set up?
I back up everything to my home server… then I run out of money and cross my fingers that it doesn’t fail.
Honestly though my important data is backed up on a couple of places, including a cloud service. 90% of my data is replaceable, so the 10% is easy to keep safe.
I love having an entire live TV channel dedicated to re-runs of old Star Trek episodes
Ok so, I have a little Kodi setup which includes a live tv system hooked up to Pluto so I can grab a bunch of channels for free. Turns out, this includes not one, but two whole channels of just Star Trek!
The first one is mostly TNG and the original series, and the other one ("creatively" called More Star Trek) has mainly Voyager and Deep Space Nine. I like these because I don't even have to think about what episode to watch, and can just enjoy some Star Trek!
I think this decentralization and federation is what web3 is all about, without all the corporations calling everything to do with monkey pixel art that costs a million dollars “web3”

Hello everyone, I would need some advice on my setup....
Cloud Storage
Anyone here got any recommendations for paid cloud storage options? Given where we are I’m looking for piracy friendly options.
Getting banned after calling out a power hungry mod.

Are most of you using Torrents or Usenet?
I’m a bit surprised to see so many torrent posts. Are most people still using Torrents? Are most piracy users aware of programs like sonarr or radarr?

What's your backup strategy?
I see many posts asking about what other lemmings are hosting, but I’m curious about your backups....
