I don’t think pitching to existing social media makes sense. Adding federation to a non-federated social media service isn’t a net win.

You have to spend the time and money to implement it. Then you have to spend the time and money to maintain it. Most of the time, ActivityPub support is implemented as mastodon compatibility, not true AP support. This means having to constantly make sure you keep up with masto changes and constantly fielding issues with other implementations because you didn’t fully implement AP.

And after implementation, you don’t just gain access to a ton of new users, you have to take on the burden of moderating all of it (which is a persistent ant recurring time and money cost). And since the has a ton of opinions on moderation, you’re always pissing somebody off.

And after all that, what you’ve enabled is an easy way for your users to recreate their social graph without your service. The idea of an interconnected social web is cool, and hopefully it’ll be the futrue, but it doesn’t make sense for profit-driven businesses.

ActivityPub 1.0.0 for WordPress has officially been released! 🎉

One of the biggest additions is the ability to set up blog-wide "catch-all" accounts, which is a fantastic new feature. It provides more flexibility compared to the previous account setup.

In terms of adoption, the plugin has already been installed on an impressive 42,831 WordPress blogs! It's amazing to witness how ActivityPub for WordPress is gaining popularity day by day.

But here's the news that truly gets me pumped up: ActivityPub support for Wordpress.com (also known as "Dotcom") is on its way! This means millions of WordPress.com users are going to join the Fediverse. Just imagine the possibilities! Currently, there are around 70 million new posts and 77 million new comments made on WordPress.com each month. The addition of ActivityPub will open up the Fediverse to a whole new level!

While Threads joining the Fediverse has sparked a lot of discussion, I believe the inclusion of WordPress (both self-hosted and Dotcom variants) could have an even more significant impact. It's an exciting time indeed! 😄

Either you send too much in a post, or too little. And it all hinges on how the receiving end renders it.

I don’t think anyone should worry about that. Make and send posts based on what you want to say, not how other software will render it. Its up to the software to fix their shortcomings. We’ve seen a huge influx of Link/Page posts from threadiverse users and now we’ll see an influx of Article posts from wordpress users. This is what the fediverse is supposed to be and projects that actually want to be part of the fediverse have to be able to render it all nicely. (This doesn’t mean first-class support for every type. Changing how you render a few fields like title, content, author, summary by post type isn’t a huge ask).
