A new article up on my website Sociological Infatuation about world historical political economist and general dirtbag Karl Marx. This is an introduction aimed at community college students and instructors looking to approach this material. This is not focused on various critiques of because it was already 2,200 words and I wanted to get something out.

Because older generations tend to be more conservative than younger generations, it looks like people get more conservative with age.

This is, thankfully, untrue.

People get more progressive with age.

It's just that previous generations get a little left behind. The jump between generations is bigger than the progress that happens within people, giving the illusion that older people become more conservative.

Some good news for once. 😊

Donald Trump compromises our national security & then . . . ruminates on being Speaker of the House.

Our capitalist rulers, and the politicians they own, are playing the long game. Since the 1950s they have been working steadily to shift the Overton window, to reduce the influence of labor unions, to boost consumerism, and to concentrate wealth and power in the hands of a few.

A large part of that strategy involves privatizing services that used to be (and should be) public.

They're playing the long game, and they are winning — much to the detriment of you and me and the environment we live in.

1: "Well, you have to give your social security number, a picture of the weakest part of your skull, and your home address to Hammers The Clown. You also have to download COVID 19 into your eyeball once per month."

2:"What that sounds terrible what does that have to do with--"

By all means, Republicans. Vote for Trump for Speaker so we can have a blue Tsunami in 2024. Show all of America that there is no non-MAGA Republican wing anymore. There are no moderates, no pragmatists, no actual conservatives left — just Trumpists. Admitting who they now are would be the first honest thing Republicans had done in years.

And Trump being Speaker offers him no immunity from prosecution.

MCCARTHY IS REMOVED

House Speaker Republican Kevin McCarthy has been voted out of his position as Speaker!

The vote is ongoing, but seven Republicans have voted for his removal, sealing his fate.

I expect utter chaos in the House for MONTHS before moderate Republicans make a deal with the dems for the next Speaker.

It is a disgrace to this country; created by a dozen MAGA REPUBLICANS!

Equating Hunter Biden's situation with Donald Trump's is like equating shoplifting with armed robbery. The media may be all-in for the false equivalencies, but those of us with the smallest of critical thinking skills can tell the difference.

"The Identity Politics of Heritage.
Decommunization, Decolonization, and Derussification of Kyiv Monuments after Russia’s Full Scale Invasion of Ukraine" by Olena Betlii (2022).

"Russia’s war against Ukraine has shown not only how the Kremlin has weaponized history, but also how the victim can fight back by breaking historical ties with the aggressor. Since March 2022, Ukraine has been developing new identity politics of heritage. The article focuses on decisions made by the Kyiv City Council, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, and the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory regarding material objects associated with Russian or Soviet heritage. It also shows how Kyiv opinionmakers and experts have reacted to changes that will eventually result in the reshaping of the city’s memory landscape".

HERITAGE, THE POWER OF THE PAST, AND THE POLITICS OF (MIS)RECOGNITION by Laurajane Smith (2022).

"Heritage is a political resource; no matter how this concept is defined, “heritage” is charged with representing individual and group identity, sense of place and belonging".

"This paper will illustrate how heritage and museum visiting, as a leisure activity, facilitates or impedes recognition and redistribution in direct and indirect ways. Drawing on extensive qualitative interviews with visitors to 45 heritage sites and museums in the USA, Australia, and England, the paper demonstrates the importance of emotions in mundane struggles over recognition and misrecognition. How emotions uphold or challenge investments in heritage narratives are examined."

If you are a critical political economist of any persuasion then let me recommend my old friend Paul Cammack's archive of long-form reviews of books on & related subjects - all with handy ratings & buy/don't but headline recommendations.

Its easily navigable & Paul's judgement is pretty sound. Even if you don't agree with him (it happens) his discussion will be thought provoking & often send you back to the book(s)

enjoy

"One of the most interesting parts of the book was the section on Emerson, in which West places Emerson in the larger historical context of thinkers like Marx and Nietzsche. I had not realized before how similar Emerson’s outlook is to Nietzsche, and it made me wonder how many Nietzscheans are unwitting Emersonians."

Speaker-in-name-only McCarthy could cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government open. Five breakaway Republicans in swing districts could work with Democrats to keep the government.

Don't let ANY Republican off the hook because they won't stand up to the extremists in their own party.
