A question asked often enough that the answer is laminated above the checkstand at Annie's Annuals in Richmond, California. @gardening#Plants#Gardening
(EN) Can anyone identify these small insects from the pictures? They are on a Sarracenia that mostly lives outdoors on a balcony in Southern Germany next to a river.

Weather report changed overnight. After a wet morning, some mid-day sun. Got dahlias & erigeron in. Methusala's granny came by on her Zimmer frame to say she winters her dahlias in the garage. I said I usually do, but had decided to follow a friend's method of leaving them out under fleece. She even showed me where my garage was because, by God, she was Methusala's granny & I needed to listen. God bless her little heart. She liked my appletinis, too. #gardening@gardening
Really missing my redbud tree (Cercis canadensis) this fall. It had such beautiful peach colored leaves.
It fell over after successive tropical storms this fall. Arborist said it was near the end of its lifespan anyway. I searched all over for volunteer seedlings but couldn’t find any. 😔
I tuckered out before the rain came. Got the other winter clematis up, plus thalictrum black stocking & a red hot poker (the little green nub in front of the thalictrum). Can't believe the thalictrum's blooming again. #gardening@gardening
First dry day in a long time, so set up the trellis, put in jasmine on the left, winter clematis on the right. Have one more large pot to move into position, but knackered, so day is done. Another dry morning tomorrow, followed by a wet afternoon, then 2 weeks of rain. Bummer. #gardening@gardening
Tried my best at adding two bags of wood chips to the new planter on my new shoes. Still a lot of pain in the legs, but it's worth it for the insects and soil quality 😻 #gardening#plants that smell of wet wood chips 👌#mulch@plants
Got permission to manage the new gravel through plants. Here's one of the hellebores with an unknown bulb that came with it from the last place. @gardening#gardening
Harvested the Passiflora lutea today. This is for the food security + rewilding project.
There are around two seeds in every berry and I collected enough already for everyone who wanted them. They don’t taste very good: sweetish pen ink with hints of dish soap. They stain a blueish purple. The flowers are edible though and can be used as a garnish.
Last of the chocolate daisy flowers. One of the petals has conveniently curled so you can see the gorgeous veining on the back. Love this guy. Look forward to seeing it next year. #gardening@gardening
@plants One thing I'm noticing as I engage in a fall cleanup of my front yard, including mainly planting cold weather plants & adding mulch, the 2 quince trees that I planted this past spring in the front yard have not only survived but grown sizably, so I'm now considering planting a few more small trees in the front yard.
Another possibility is my trying to get some roses to put along my backyard property line, with some Egyptian walking onions, as I really don't like the stench roses have.
@plants and no, I'm really not sure on rose varieties but my main requirements of them are - low maintenance in my zone 6 cold hardiness zone, having rose hips that are easy enough to gather for use in syrups, jams & drinks, spreading well for ease of growing & renewing said hedge .. And flowers being any other color than red is last on my preference list. ... I'm not sure how much I care about thorns or not as long as the hips won't be easily destroyed by my grip with gloves on. #gardening
There is a sort of roses "Pirnitzer Vitaminrose" or PiRo 3 which is bred for extra big hips with much Vitamine C. It has almost no thorns and flowers like a wild rose.
I was worried the pollinators wouldn’t find these flowers after two new species were completely ignored (achocha and pink soba). But they found it. 😊 Maybe I will have spider berries for Halloween?
We lost the gravel battle, cuz the landlord says it's cheaper. Killing the = cost effective. In this section, he moved the gravel, put down new membrane, then put back the dirty gravel. Within 2 weeks, there was new grass. At 3 weeks, the grass is 4" tall. When I stick my finger into the gravel, the first digit is coated in dirt. He tried to charge the last tenant for the existent shoddy landscaping. We're thinking about putting heathers & lavenders in to save our deposit. #gardening@gardening
I have acquired (what I assume is a) #Yucca gigantea. The problem: I know next to nothing about it, since I don't typically grow tropical/indoor plants!
I've done some reading, so am beginning to understand its needs, but I do not have enough knowledge to tell if it is a healthy plant.
Can someone help out and tell me whether any particular TLC (beyond clearing the pot of debris & maybe amending the soil a bit) is needed here? Thank you!!
Looking closely to see if a bargain table rose is reviving (it’s Margaret Merrill for rose fans), it was lovely to find this tiny friend sheltering. Aphids, we’re ready for you.
