So I've finally struggled my way through 召树屯 (Zhao Shutun)¹, a piece of #Dai#folklore in #epic#poetry form. The volume I have is published by #Wuhan University Press and is a translation into both #Mandarin and #English. Unfortunately the foreword and introduction are both only in Mandarin which proved to be a real slog.

It provides a consistent metaphor for the way that a foreign concept can be introduced into an otherwise balanced system of powers in opposition, to highlight and exploit the unseen weaknesses of those enjoying the balance.
Similar to 'And the Children Shall Lead", "Day of the Dove' is far more effective, which is a shame: "And the Children Shall Lead" has a powerful and similar message all it's own.
