I reviewed Conan the Barbarian issue 4 for Grimdark Magazine. I had pretty mixed feelings about this, the conclusion of the first Titan Comics story arc!
SENSATIONAL WILD-WEST DETECTIVE yarn features the “Holmes On the Range” brothers—a pair of cowboys turned sleuths—guarding a fossil dig in Wyoming with trouble not far behind. Brilliant return of these colorful characters in a sharp, twisty plot. A MINUS
"Follow up to Midnight Reunion - and although I didn’t read it, I have no doubt it would be every bit as entertaining as this... Hot rockers, steamy sex, and lyrics to the Midnight Hunt music... what more could you want? 5 stars."
My #bookreview is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, spectacular #horror#books far & wide.
A HAUNTING ON THE HILL by Elizabeth Hand is fine, as a "haunted house" book. It's competent & relatively engaging AS LONG AS YOU DON'T COMPARE IT TO THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE.
The tone, plot, & writing is not at the same level- not even in the same neighborhood- as Jackson's. Hill House's horrors still walk alone.
"Another wonderful rock and roll story... Watching these up-and-coming bands as they prepare for the biggest concert of their lives is a joy. I would highly recommend not missing out on any of the books in this amazing series. 5 Stars."
BARBRA STREISAND’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY is as unique as its subject and her remarkable career. Lots of candor about her childhood and her professional life, very little gossip about her romantic life, a strong throughline of moral and artistic clarity. A MINUS
Linda reviews "Trueflame" by Vanessa Ricci-Thode, Fireborn book 2:
"I recommend Trueflame and would suggest reading book one first. This book is full of amazing characters, betrayals, secrets, and surprises - a war between water and fire. Wow."
Today's review! More Than October by Blake Allwood:
"There is so much to this story, the falling in love, the sharing of pasts, the side characters, the respect of these two men for each other... More Than October has all the feels and more. I could not put it down - it's a must-read."
@bookstodon I just reviewed Cadwell Turnbull's sequel to NO GODS, NO MONSTERS, which is titled WE ARE THE CRISIS. It's not a standalone, so you will need to read NGNM first. For those of you who have read the first book, since it's been a while, I recommend re-reading it. It turns out to be a very smooth transition. Now that you know all the characters, the second book is much easier to follow. This is fantasy horror at its best.
NEAR-FUTURE NOIR THRILLER, set in a Pacific Northwest sodden with “broken weather,” combines lots of action and a colorful cast of characters for a highly entertaining read. B PLUS
Charli Trenthan plans to leave her hometown of Stone Lake. But when she receives a cryptic message from a member of the Sanctuary, a conservative closed community nestled in the forest, she is determined to find answers.
"A multi-author series, all standalone books filled with amazing characters and a rock band theme. Your life is not your own, record labels own you, and you work long hours that leave you drained after a show. Yo always have to be on. 5 Stars."
I’m feeling like I’m hitting a wall right now with. It getting any early reviews for my upcoming book. Ok it’s more than no arc reviews. I’m not even getting emails back from multiple dozens of people I’ve reached out to. Many of whom have previously shown interest in my work and/or have reviewed a previous book. Long story short, if you’re a #bookreviewer and currently accepting new #books please let me know #bookreview#writingcommunity#bookstodon#writinglife@bookstodon
Today's queer indie author review! Going Down" by Lady Jaguar:
"This book is filled with sex, I won’t say romance because that is not in Richard’s vocabulary, but there’s lots of suspense, lies, surprises and two amazing characters… and did I mention sex? 5 Stars."
#BookReview How optimistic or delusional does a 25-yr veteran of publishing have to be to open a tiny bookshop up on a steep hill in an Italian Tuscan village of 180 people? Poet Alba Donati did just that in December 2019 and this is her account of returning to her childhood home and setting up a perfect little gem of a bookshop, and the ups and downs of it all. She's an embracer of life and a people person, and if this book is anything to go by, a force of nature. The diary entries flit back and forth in time, jump from what's happening with the shop to stories about the characters who make up her large family and the villagers. She writes eloquently about the mountainous landscape she loves, and the books she cares passionately about. It's catnip for readers who can't resist a book about books.
THE EXTRAORDINARY, TRAGICALLY SHORT life of Tupac Shakur is explored in this authorized biography, rich with detail from his family, friends, and colleagues. Insightful, clear writing with heart. A MINUS
Today's indie author review! Coming Out at Crofton Hall" by Rebecca Cohen:
"Cohen does a fantastic job. They all grow and change, and become very likable characters. Well written, serious and fun, full of banter and lots of romance. I'm ready for the next story."
