YSK: There's a history of animals being charged for criminal acts ( en.m.wikipedia.org )

Why YSK: Did you know that throughout history, there have been cases where animals were actually charged with criminal acts? It’s pretty surprising, right? These stories give us a unique glimpse into how societies have dealt with the actions of animals and how the legal system has responded. By learning about these cases, we...

YSK that You can now generate posts for Lemmy/Kbin, search for posts, and redirect posts from foreign instances (with Instance Assistant v1.2.5)

Why YSK: It’s a free and open source browser extension we have been working on, which might make it easier to use Lemmy & Kbin. This update in particular brings a few features that make the sites a lot easier to use, in particular the ability to jump from a post on one instance to the same post on another. Since the URL...

YSK there is a 30-Day Map Challenge on Mastodon in November ( lemmy.world )

Why YSK: It’s a really cool challenge where each day people post their map interpretations of the theme of the day (points, lines, etc. - see graphic). You can learn a lot and see cool and unexpected data. The challenge is happening on all social media platforms, but I’m specifically mentioning Mastodon for obvious...

YSK: Google to Block Access to Canadian News for Anyone Living in Canada ( www.thestar.com )

The Online News Act passed last Thursday and would force platforms like Google and Meta, Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, to strike deals with Canadian media publishers for sharing, previewing and directing users to online Canadian news content.

YSK: You can bypass hCaptcha and Cloudflare Captcha legally with Privacy Pass extension

There’s been an add-on called Privacy Pass for a few years now. This plugin gives you 30 passes for CF and 5 passes for hCaptcha when you solve one. For example, once you solve 1 captcha for Cloudflare, you will not see 30 captchas again! It will automatically pass....

Everything Must Be Paid for Twice ( www.raptitude.com )

One financial lesson they should teach in school is that most of the things we buy have to be paid for twice. There’s the first price, usually paid in dollars, just to gain possession of the desired thing, whatever it is: a book, a budgeting app, a unicycle, a bundle of kale. But then, in order to make use of the thing, you...

YSK: You can save your fav comments from Lemmy to a dedicated text archiving service ( lemmy.world )

I’ve been running notado.app primarily for myself for the last 3 years. Like a lot of you, I am moving over to Lemmy from Reddit, and like a lot of you, I learned so much from the comments I read over years and years on Reddit. I must have hundreds of saved comments from Reddit in my Notado account at this point....

YSK about corporations' strategies to kill open source protocols ( ploum.net )

I saw this in another thread on /c/Showerthoughts. I think it's important for this to be circulated widely so that the broader Fediverse community is aligned. We don't want admins second-guessing their decisions when users start infighting. We should be united in our thinking and ready to protect our platform.

A digital speedpainting. A giant reaper with a golden chain around their neck with the logo of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp and a headband with the meta logo. The giant silhouette surprise a tiny group in comparison; a warm scene of small cute characters gathered around a Fediverse glowing logo. This is the mascott of Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey, Funkwhale, Lemmy, Peertube.

This is my feelings in reference to the discussions about Meta joining the Fediverse...

YSK Hubert Humphrey's name -- in 1948 (!), he gave a speech at the DNC in favor of civil rights. ( www.americanrhetoric.com )

I read his name in “Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72,” but I never really understood who he was. This was back when the Democrats were the racist party and the Republicans were the party of Lincoln, decades before LBJ and Nixon tacitly agreed to exchange those positions. Here’s what he said in 1948:...
