He honestly wasn’t far off. Filming the Lord of the Rings movies in the late 90s and the blend of practical effects, camera tricks and cgi required the cinematic equivalent of landing a man on the moon. Personally I don’t think it’s been matched, even Avatar looks like a cartoon.
