Why Chatbots Fail to Replace Human Interaction

Large language models like ChatGPT are reviving interest in chatbots and virtual assistants. However, chatbots have failed to gain traction in the past during the rise of both websites and apps. The key issue is that users prefer to interact with their personal virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, rather than individual chatbots. With improved language capabilities, virtual assistants will integrate information and functionality from apps and skills, becoming the new interface for users. Therefore, rather than creating chatbots, developers should focus on integrating with popular virtual assistants to reach users. Individual chatbots are unlikely to gain traction as few users want to talk to each individual chatbot.
