NPR Owl Podcast EDIT: Review and Summary added!

There aren’t too many owl podcasts I’ve come across, so I’ll share this. I haven’t listened to this I’ve yet, but I’ve heard others with this author. Her book has been very popular with the greater owl community this year, I see plugs for it everywhere.

Every winter in Connecticut, the snowy owls will pass through our state and can sometimes be spotted at the Connecticut shoreline. But they are just one of many owl species to look out for where we live.

Some cultures see owls as deeply spiritual creatures and as symbols of wisdom. Others see them as bad omens and as signs of impending doom. And that’s definitely impacting their populations.

Today, Author Jennifer Ackerman joins us to talk about her new book What the Owl Knows: The new science of the world’s most enigmatic birds and we explore the world of these incredible birds.

I’ve gotten to listen to it now. Very good talk by the author, covering a vast range of topics. I’ll give you some quick points, but you should listen to it if you like the things I post.

The first owl she went to see was a Mexican Spotted Owl, and there was a fun story about that

She talked about the history of owls and when they first appeared. Also about a 30,000 year old cave carving of an owl. It seems we’ve found them superb for quite a while now.

Talk of how owls are hard to study, and how we’re still learning new things, getting more accurate data, and discovering new owls like this Long Whiskered Owlet.

Other topics are how owls make terrible pets, training owls, their intelligence and range of vocabulary, their unique migration habits, pet owls of famous people in history, and a bunch of other things. I highly recommend checking this one out!
