Owl Egg Hatching (Equipment and Potential Problems)

10 minute video from Falconry and Me YouTube channel, based in Scotland.

Goes over a lot of great topics from why eggs are incubated, to repairing cracked shells, the hatching process, and a baby Little Owl’s first meal.

You get to see 2 different incubators, some requirement to monitor the heart, and egg candling to see the bird inside the egg.

Some highlights:

The most interesting fact to me was after they initially poked through the shell it still took 2 days to hatch.

What did you learn from watching?

Follow up video

This Tawny Owl had problems hatching, so some emergency actions were taken to save him. It was very interesting the number of potential ways he could have died, both if he would have been left to hatch on his own as if in the wild, and also the risk involved in manually removing him from the egg improperly or too early.
