Sawyer the Saw Whet Owl in Washington

State 47 - Washington

WSU College of Veterinary Medicine - Pullman, WA

Sawyer was found in someone’s yard in 2013 with an undetermined wing injury that left her unable to fly. She is now a lifetime member of the WSU Raptor Club as an educational animal. She has a very detailed species write up on their website I encourage you to read. If anything, this website is too good, because there are so many articles and links, I can’t find anything I’m looking for as far as visitor info and events. They talk about educational programs, and I saw some news articles about public events, but I can’t find anything current or upcoming.

Quick Fact

Saw-whet owls are the fifth smallest owl in North America. The four species that are smaller are the northern pygmy owl, ferruginous pygmy owl, flammulated owl, and elf owl. Because they are so small in size and highly nocturnal, the saw-whet owl is very hard to spot.

I really want to see a flammulated owl now! I think they’re extra pretty, and hearing they’re even smaller than a SWO makes them that much cuter!

I’ll toss some more pics of Sawyer down in the comments!

They do have great faces for anthropomorphic expressions. The big eyes open gives that shocked look, and then when they squint their eyes, it gives them such a contemptuous scowl. It’s great!
