Saw a comment about hiding long posts under CW on other account... Maybe I'll do that moving forward too. But what is long, really? 🤔

(Something more than a paragraph?)

@testing@kbin.social avatar

@geraineon replying from kbin, i'd like to add that cw's from microblogging fedi are not being displayed on kbin at all

testing,
@testing@kbin.social avatar

@geraineon
just noticed that i can see more replies to your post than on sakurajima.social > also my upvote of your post seems to have not federated

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@testing haha I'm quite sure kbin social is a lot more permissive than sakurajima social so that's not surprising. When I get home I'll take a look at well.

Hm. Upvote should translate to a like, or a boost?

testing,
@testing@kbin.social avatar

@geraineon
upvotes should be rendered as a star, i.e. upvotes are likes

testing,
@testing@kbin.social avatar

@geraineon
oh, now i got it: upvotes from kbin translate to hearts on your instance ❤️

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@testing weirdly, my kbin reply doesn't appear here at all... did you have to tag ppl while replying on there?

testing,
@testing@kbin.social avatar

@geraineon
this seems to be a kbin bug: you tagged me in a reply to the original post, and i received no notification > only saw it after reading your reply above

geraineon,
@geraineon@kbin.social avatar

@testing I don't even see my own reply to you anymore, hahaha. it disappeared somehow

testing,
@testing@kbin.social avatar

@geraineon it is there ♥️

@geraineon

geraineon,
@geraineon@kbin.social avatar

@testing I see it now. Thank you~!

and hm, I think I know why. When I first hit reply earlier, I didn't tag you and then I realized kbin doesn't automatically tag the person that is being replied to, so I edited the post to tag your username. Editing a post doesn't notify you I guess! And it doesn't federate.

@geraineon

@geraineon
the backfilling worked though > with all its early beta version bugs, kbin continues to impress me everyday 👀

@geraineon

geraineon,
@geraineon@kbin.social avatar

@testing yeah. kbin's development is exciting XD

also TIL microblog fedi polls don't display on kbin

@geraineon

testing,
@testing@kbin.social avatar

@geraineon
yep, this is a drawback!

@geraineon

geraineon,
@geraineon@kbin.social avatar

@testing I don't see more replies on kbin though, which is strange. Can you screenshot what you see?

testing,
@testing@kbin.social avatar

@geraineon
had one more look at sakurajima.social, and yes! you are right, and i was wrong, maaf ya ...

on your instance, you can indeed find all replies to your original post - the way they show up is handled differently from kbin where you can see more replies at a glance, without having to open each conversation separately

@geraineon I personally consider the cutoff for a "long" post to be somewhere around 1000 characters of normally spaced text, maybe 3-5 paragraphs. That's the length I would want a CW for - even though I have CWs set to auto-expand, I can click them to close them again if I'm not interested in the post.

I don't know how other people feel. Maybe you could do a poll?

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@xieliansbignaturals I honestly think calling it a content warning is the issue here hahaha. If it's called a content cut/collapse wrapper or whatever, there will be a lot less discourse around its usage.

Someone else said 3 paragraphs too, and another said mastodon limit of 500 words. Which seems around 3 paragraphs imo

I might do a poll later

xieliansbignaturals,
@xieliansbignaturals@blorbo.social avatar

@geraineon Huh, I'm not sure how that plays into it. I personally feel like it makes perfect sense to use a "content warning" for content you want to warn for, even if the thing is just "it's a long post."

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@xieliansbignaturals content warning has a heavier connotation to it, I think. (Idk if you were here for the content warning discourse of November 2022 fedi 😂)

Some feel that it cheapens the use of CW when it's not stuff that are trigger warning worthy (usually sex, racism), some think putting some stuff under content warning makes that thing they put under content warning to be something shameful (e.g., food), because it's a warning

That's why I think maybe if it's called something different, it might not have led to as much discourse? (Personally, I think muting terms and hashtags work better if I wanna avoid stuff)

xieliansbignaturals,
@xieliansbignaturals@blorbo.social avatar

@geraineon Yeah... I personally wish people would CW more sparingly. Because of people's habit of using CW's like "Genshin Impact", I had to turn on auto-expand months ago. (Otherwise, my muscle memory would have learned to auto-expand things anyway.) I have some pretty intense triggers, and filters don't always catch them, so that sucks! I just have to unfollow people. :(

I would worry that calling CW's something else would only aggravate this issue.

capriciousvisage,
@capriciousvisage@blorbo.social avatar

@xieliansbignaturals @geraineon I actually agree with this. I dislike using CWs for things like long posts and other trivial things. People overuse it and I don't want to auto-expand things so I end up just straight up not caring enough to open a CW. Part of that is my pettiness and aggravation at people using it for ANYTHING though.

xieliansbignaturals,
@xieliansbignaturals@blorbo.social avatar

@capriciousvisage @geraineon Thank you!! 😭 (I would probably agree with you about long posts if my chosen mobile interface had a way to collapse them. I just don't want to scroll forever.) It IS really aggravating! I want to be able to use CWs the way they were intended. 😭 I want to follow more people and not have to turn off boosts.

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@xieliansbignaturals what is your client? My web interface of sharkey automatically shortens posts so it's not an issue for me.

And I come from LJ history, where cuts are basically cut for length so I think it instinctively makes sense to me, hahaha.

Speaking of spoilers, do you prefer CW or do you prefer tags?

(Also you can turn off boosts for specific people only, I think!) @capriciousvisage

capriciousvisage,
@capriciousvisage@blorbo.social avatar

@geraineon @xieliansbignaturals I use Phanpy on desktop and Megalodon on mobile. They both shorten long posts automatically.

It depends on the spoiler tbh. If someone is getting in depth for several posts in a row and often, then a tag makes sense. If it's here or there then a CW is fine.

I think my problem with using CW for long posts is that it isn't like an LJ cut or Tumblr read more to me. There's functionally no way to actually preview the post like those mechanics.

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@capriciousvisage @xieliansbignaturals I think that kinda gets into how there is no standards to what gets described in a CW.

"CW: long post" says absolutely nothing, while "CW: long post, anime recommendations, Gankutsuou" is better.

But there's also character limit to CW description...

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@capriciousvisage @xieliansbignaturals and there's no way to CW part of a post so we gotta do creative things like put stuff in different posts...

capriciousvisage,
@capriciousvisage@blorbo.social avatar

@geraineon A lot of apps for masto at least will auto clip long posts.

To me though, a long post is 3+ paragraphs. That's just me though. I'd rather read everything shorter than that in one go and not have to suffer an extra click.

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@capriciousvisage so you prefer posts split out into a thread, rather than have it all in one post?

There's an auto-expand CW option (but that also means CW will not work anymore for potentially triggery things on your timeline for you)

capriciousvisage,
@capriciousvisage@blorbo.social avatar

@geraineon No, sorry, I explained poorly. If something is around 1-3 paragraphs, I'd prefer no CW but in one post. I still don't like CWs for long posts in general though. Especially since the interfaces I use will auto clip longer posts.

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@capriciousvisage ah, thank you for clarifying!

anianimalsmoe,
@anianimalsmoe@sakurajima.moe avatar

@geraineon
On a lot of mastodon servers/clients, they don't shrink long posts with and provide click to expand. :blobfoxangrylaugh:

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@anianimalsmoe I didn't think of that because it's fine on mine ahaha. I am not even on any clients... Feel a lil bad for my recent kinda long posts with my dec recs
