This seems like a new low, in my lifetime at least. A regime carries out ethnic cleansing in full view of the world - broadcasting its intentions in barely coded language - while our governments affirm their full support. Israel threatens to punish the UN for trying to protect human rights, blocks visas for its staff - who are trying to protect civilian lives. Talk about arrogance and hubris; talk about defiance of international law. #Palestine#Israel (2/7)
Israel has killed over 7,000 Palestinian civilians and this number is growing by the day. Some 'revenge'. Millions more face ruined lives, after decades of grinding, squeezing occupation. Some reporting slants this as a 'humanitarian emergency' - calling for a humanitarian pause. No - the air strikes must stop. #Palestine#Israel (3/7)
Clearly aid trucks and workers should be allowed in but this is not a natural disaster, not inevitable. Air strikes are intentionally killing civilians, engaging in collective punishment. These are war crimes. #Palestine#Israel (4/7)
That alone should be sufficient reason for journalists and media organizations to condemn Israel's acts. If our reporting is in the service of freedom and democracy, we have to make sure there is accountability for this. #Palestine#Israel (6/7)
They had been overflown by an Israeli helicopter and drones. After broadcasting a live feed for 45 minutes, the Reuters, AFP and Al Jazeera teams turned their cameras to show an Israeli outpost from where tanks were firing. Within 90 seconds a tank round hit them. #Palestine#gaza#Lebanon#Israel
The IDF said 'we don't target journalists' but didn't comment further on the investigations findings. Unfortunately the evidence suggests otherwise. At least 63 media workers are confirmed as having been killed in this conflict so far, the vast majority of them Palestinian
This of course begs the question, why target journalists? The inference is clear: Israeli forces know what they are up to, and want to limit the accountability they face by killing many journalists, which also serves as convenient deterrence to others
