that will not index Drive documents unless they are fully downloaded—unless you are searching for keywords stored in their extended attributes.

This is a surprisingly big oversight. The more you use to store your documents (which Apple somewhat encourages you to do), the more likely you won’t be able to find them by searching for their content with Spotlight.

@drahardja iCloud Drive doesn't always sync all the metadata, so that's an even bigger problem.

@fluder Yeah, this seems like a deferred feature that never got fully implemented. IMO any device that pushes an update to iCloud Drive should pre-index its content and push up a Spotlight sidecar file, which is always downloaded and merged into the local indexes on all endpoints.
