This is Handmaid’s Tale stuff. We are the dystopia now.

I remember when even anti-abortion politicians were careful to say they would never criminalize the pregnant women. Now Nebraska is imprisoning a mother who helped her teenage daughter with an abortion pill.

@JamesGleick this would have also been illegal in Germany (12 weeks) and France (14 weeks). The article doesn’t say at which point this pregnancy was terminated but it says it was “well past 20 weeks.” That’s five months. That’s not a clump of cells.

You’re being hysterical comparing this to Handmaid’s Tale. Unless the entirety of Europe is actually Gilead…

@alfa_vuk Have any mothers or daughters been imprisoned in Europe for using abortion pills? Show me.

@JamesGleick here you go

"Mother-of-three Carla Foster, 44, was sentenced to 28 months in prison in June for using abortion pills when she was between 32 and 34 weeks pregnant in 2020."

This was in the UK.

@alfa_vuk If only you’d managed to read ONE MORE SENTENCE you would know that she was never imprisoned. Because, “compassion.”

@JamesGleick imprisoned vs sentenced is splitting hairs. The fact is what these two women did in the US would be illegal in most of Europe due to abortion limits being well under 20 weeks. The legality of it doesn't change on whether it was done in a clinic or at home.

Or indeed whether the cause of the intentional termination were pills or something else.

@alfa_vuk One young woman is imprisoned for two years. Another is free for reasons of compassion.

I’m trying to imagine how someone can think the difference is “splitting hairs.” It matters to the women concerned.
