⚡ We are shifting to zero-emission mobility.
📱 What if we could also shift to digital ?

The digital driving licence we proposed in March will make driving in the simpler and safer.

It will be:
🏍 Valid across country borders
🚗 Accessible from your phone and other digital devices
🚙 Easier to replace, renew, or exchange online

Our proposal will also include new measures to boost road safety, including a zero-tolerance rule on drink driving.

@EU_Commission what about the other side of the stick of electromobility - charging stations? As there are two options to choose from for driving license, maybe regulate also charging? Requiring alternative payment options so we could pay in the same way as on gas stations - card or cash without all those gimmicks as „create account to use charging service” (multiplied by amount of charging providers).

@EU_Commission Great, lets hope it replaces the pointless form that UK people had to fill in at a post office where we had to glue a photo of ourselves to a piece of paper that says stuff in several languages, which then gets stamped by some random post office employee for some countries, except for spain, which needs a separate but very similar form.... oh wait, the UK isn't in the EU any more :( bah

Next: harmonize the madness of emissions stickers. I'm running out of windshield space.

@EU_Commission Will those mobile driving licenses work for those people who only have Free/Open Source applications on their phone. I kicked googled and other non-FOSS application off my phone.

@EU_Commission

Having it as an option is in theory rather okay - but I've also learned that in this world, this is most likely the first step to abolish the physical drivers license.

My own government is also very keen on introducing this SPOF (single point of failure) situation, by insisting on putting everything on peoples smartphone (Smartphone meaning latest iOS/Android), which is causing more and more severe problems for citizens that do not follow that given path.

@EU_Commission Zero emission ?? That's forgetting the cost of building (and changing) batteries and cars.

macr,

@EU_Commission So, let me get this right, your Zero Emissions Mobility policy is to make it easier to drive, and in effect increase the number of private vehicles? Hmmmm....

@EU_Commission this sounds both super convenient and like an infosec nightmare.

The 30km/h limits are reportedly hard to follow by the drivers. So what do you think of saving everyone a hassle and adding a requirement that new cars had at least an option for an automatically GPS-activated speed limiter for such areas ? Safer pedestrians, happier drivers who don’t get fines…

@EU_Commission as long as the option for physical cards remains, go for it! 😐

"We are shifting to zero-emission mobility."
You mean shifting to walking?
Because other forms of mobility usually emit light, sound, microplastics from tyres, dust from mining for materials and a lot of them emit carbon dioxide on top of that.

@EU_Commission I don't see why linking national driver's license registers requires all drivers to carry a smartphone and have a digital driver's license.

@EU_Commission How will it work when I just broke my phone?

EU_Commission,
@EU_Commission@social.network.europa.eu avatar

@wonka It will be much easier to replace it since all procedures will be online. You will also be able to hold a physical driving licence, or both, as you wish. ☺

@EU_Commission Physical licence for me it will be, then.

rince,
@rince@chaos.social avatar

@EU_Commission @wonka that means as soon as I have no mobile phone anymore (either stolen, broken or I am simply unable to afford a new phone or want a phone without USA-access) I won't be able to drive? I think I am happy with a physical card which doesn't need electricity...
