I need advice from the techies on Mastodon:

I'm using Ghost's blog software for my website. The only integrated option for the native tool is .

Sadly, I don't have the know-how to run my own bulk mail server.

Do I best stick with Mailgun or do I go for option two, use a Czech-based alternative (Make) that integrates with a German-hosted newsletter service? Or a 3rd option?

@AimeeMaroux if you're looking for a European-based, privacy driven solution, Proton, based in Switzerland, might be worth looking at. I'm using it personal, but they have business solutions as well. I don't know about your mail volumes/subscriber numbers, so it's hard to guestimate anything. Maybe contact them to get an idea of costs involved? The personal account is free, professional solutions probably not.

@AimeeMaroux I wouldn't opt for selfhosting an email server. Deliverability is probably the most important feature for a mailinglist. And selfhosting is almost a guarantee for many mails to be blacklisted, caught in spamfilters or get blocked.

You could opt for a delivery service in the EU indeed. But in all cases, I would suggest you weigh delivery against all other "features".

Also, if you need any hands on help, feel free to DM me. I can help you wire up stuff, or migrate data if you need.

@AimeeMaroux what concern are you trying to allay?

@bedtimedrillsgt I don't like the idea of giving user data to a third party but I don't have the skill to set up self-hosted bulk mail.
My concern is with the data of my subscribers. EU data privacy laws are strict so that is why I'm considering the 2nd option of using EU based services instead of mailgun.

@AimeeMaroux fair enough. I do not think the emails of newsletter recipients are such crazily sensitive data that you must be worried about it (mailgun is, after all, simply an email delivery service, like sendgrid or any other). One thing you could figure out is if they support another outgoing SMTP server. If so, you can choose from any appropriate provider of email services and hook up the ghost outgoing mail functionality to that service instead.

@AimeeMaroux https://docs.bitnami.com/aws/apps/ghost/configuration/configure-smtp/ - something like this. But I am not sure if the hosted version of ghost has it

@bedtimedrillsgt It's not super sensitive data but still. I'm self-hosting Ghost, so I can set the outbound emails but it doesn't work for bulk mail. Ghost makes a distinction and only allows Mailgun for bulk mail.

@AimeeMaroux https://ghost.org/docs/faq/mailgun-newsletters/ - ah yes I just read this. Makes sense to me. And again, I think you're fine.

@AimeeMaroux Mailgun is the one I am most familiar with and it’s the one the digital agency I used to work for used when a client didn’t have their own resources already. I don’t know if that’s helpful or not.

@thudfactor My hosting provider also recommended it but idk. I would prefer a self-hosted alternative so my subscribers' data always remains with me only. I feel like I'm not savvy enough to do that, though 😕

@AimeeMaroux Few people are savvy enough to run their own email service! They are such a target for hackers that they are difficult to secure, keep secure, and then keep off of the spam filter lists.
