Karl Popper's Paradox of Tolerance:

If everyone is tolerant of every idea, then intolerant ideas will emerge. Tolerant people will tolerate this intolerance, and the intolerant people will not tolerate the tolerant people. Eventually, the intolerant people will take over and create a society of intolerance. Therefore, Popper said, to maintain a society of tolerance, the tolerant must be intolerant of intolerance…

I would argue the logical fallacy lies on the side of the intolerant.

How can they demand tolerance, when they themselves don’t show it?

Tolerant society don’t even need Popper for this.

Intolerant people can’t demand tolerance before they can’t explain why they themselves don’t show it.

The ball is on their side.

@leidkultur @analyticus @philosophy @gerritbeine tolerance is a social contract. People that show intolerance do not fulfill their part of the contract and therefore do not deserve tolerance on our end. Tolerance only works as a mutually agreeable state.

Yup. A conclusion I reached myself many years ago.

I think of it this way:

"If you let people do what they want, guess what? They'll do what they want."

This is why unrestrained capitalism leads... every single time... to misery for the majority. It's the narcissists that are the problem and if you let them get away with it... they'll just keep wanting more. Think: kings and queens, or shits like Putin ... or uhhh Musk.

Ms Guillotin knew how to discourage them.

We need to see tolerance as a bilateral contrat where both side play the same game respecting the same rules.

^^^ THIS!

Tolerance is a social contract. Intolerant ideologies break the terms of that contract and so are not subject to its terms, i.e. intolerant ideologies need not be tolerated by wider society.
