Someone online today asked me what was the difference between
and . I don't know much about nihilism beyond basics so I looked up comparisons and found this amazing quote.

A nihilist will look at their life and say, "My existence has no purpose."

A Taoist will look at their life and say, "My existence IS my purpose."

From a Taoist's perspective, that is spot-on correct. Anyone out there a ? Does that quote ring true from your standpoint?

kellyn,

@patrickstewart @philosophy ? That sounds exhausting! lol 😎 takes a similar stance to . Our existence has no purpose but we have to make one for ourselves.

@patrickstewart @philosophy a nihilist is simply someone who rejects all theories of morality and religion. That does not mean that they believe their lives have no purpose - Nietzsche, the philosopher most associated with nihilism, spent great deals of time explaining how to avoid feeling as though your life has no purpose. His main replacement for following God’s will is to follow the passion of knowledge.

In short, no. My life has no purpose is what a depressed person says.

@2du @patrickstewart @philosophy Is purpose necessary for life? Is existing for a certain time in a certain space enough?

And 2 add 2 my previous comment, the ancient Rishis & the teachings of the Upanishads specifically cover how 2 perceive "God".
As all those who have begun 2 recognize being on the path 2 enlightenment, They understand "God" as Existence & the Universal Consciousness of ALL.
I Am.
We are all aspects of that Consciousness within ourselves.
It's as tho the Universe is observing Itself thru our senses, For that matter, thru all plant, animal & insect senses. All Life.☯️

A Taoist will look at their life and say, "My existence IS my purpose." Yes & so will a Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim & a Jew.
IF..they follow the teachings of their ancestors before the birth Christ & near the time of Buddha.
Yogi Patanjali, in his book of Yoga Aphorisms explains it simply:
"The Soul does not love It is Love Itself.
It does not exist, It is Existence Itself.
It does not know, it is Knowledge Itself.
How to know God".
It's Ancient world wisdom!

@patrickstewart @philosophy a nihilist would probably say: "Existence has no purpose".
