Yep. Eyes are open, so it's at least 10 days old, but doesn't look to be too much older than that. This kitten will need to be bottle fed and stimulated to go to the bathroom. Kittenlady has a ton of info on her youtube
She also has an active youtube channel with lots of tips. I really can't recommend her channel enough to people taking care if very young kittens with no mom.
Good on you for taking the baby in and even more for your willingness to get help. We had a crash course in neonatal kitten care ourselves. It’s scary how fast they can crash and you have no idea how long this one’s been without proper milk already.
BTW, definitely don’t give cow’s milk. It’s not only not helpful, it’s actually harmful. Kitten milk replacer is the only thing you can do right now. And these babies have to eat many times a day.
To be clear, definitely feed the kitten if you can’t get help until tomorrow or you will almost certainly lose it. The kitten lady advice is sound. You can get KMR powder and nipples/feeders at big-box pet stores. If none are around, you’re going to have to go to a 24/7 emergency vet. I can’t stress enough, you will probably lose the kitten otherwise.
I’ve been syringe- feeding him a mixture of lactose free, dehydrated milk, egg yolk and a little corn syrup for the meantime. I’m in a developing country and there isn’t really any infrastructure around pet care, unless in the capital city… I truly hope they have the KMR powder… I’ll embark on the journey with him tomorrow, but by the way he’s been drinking the mixture I’m more than confident he’ll make it trough the night.
Thanks again mate. When I brought him to the vet it turned out that he was severely constipated. After the vet relieved him and a few days of kitten formula he seemed like a completely new cat!
Give yourself most of the credit. You did more than a lot of people would do. It takes money and hard work to save an abandoned neonatal kitten. Heartfelt congratulations to you both.
Yes he has indeed and it honestly feels amazing. I grew up around cats, but I never had a pet, with which I have formed such a deep connection like I have with him.
My daughter found a kitten on the side of the road 3 weeks ago too and brought her to my house, she may be your evil twin lol (Joking of course, this is in Canada)
Edit: well joking about the twin part, maybe not so much the evil bit… she’s presently trying to chew my sock off.
Wow, that’s a beauty right there! I can relate to the chewing part. Mine has found a particular interest in chewing on my fingers, which has gradually become more painful the more teeth he got…
Take care with the chewing fingers part, one of the cats I adopted from animal rescue is around 2 years old now (actual birthday is unknown) and he still loves to chew on my fingers and nibble on my chin to show his affection. I doubt he’ll ever grow out of it but I did at least manage to teach him to be more gentle with immediate responses of “ouch” and pulling my fingers away whenever he got too carried away and started applying too much pressure. I also immediately scratched his ears after (he loves that) with my other hand to show that I’m not angry at him. Eventually he made the connection that too much nibble-pressure is bad.
Also thanks a ton for the update, I was wondering wether the little guy made it a couple of days ago. This really made my week. :)
Aww thank you for thinking about him <3 This is extremely valuable advice. I’ve been wondering how to teach him in that regard. Will definitely try it out!
I find if you “overreact” a little when they bite a bit too hard, they usually get the hint pretty quick. Beezly the kitten has pretty much figured it out now, although she still thinks climbing my leg as if it’s a tree trunk is the greatest thing ever, especially when I’m trying to get her food ready. She tends to forget manners when she get excited in the least bit.
