@stina_marie @bookstodon @horrorbooks I'm so glad Bulgakov made your list!

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon @horrorbooks It's so good! Blew me away when I read it years ago. I love how many layers there are to it- and how all the subtext & political stuff is there to analyze and examine (and enhance) the story, but it's also just a very good, darkly funny tale about how ambiguous terms like "good" and "bad" are.

@kimlockhartga @stina_marie @bookstodon @horrorbooks Which Bulgakov translation? Discovered with my book club it makes all the difference!

I have this one, it's translated by Michael Glenny.

@stina_marie @kimlockhartga @bookstodon @horrorbooks I haven't read that version yet. About 10 years ago I read the Diana Burgin and Katherine O'Connor one and more recently a wonderful one into Portuguese by Irineu Franco Perpetuo.

@stina_marie @kimlockhartga @bookstodon @horrorbooks The history of the different translations (and versions of the original) are fascinating in themselves! https://welovetranslations.com/2022/10/31/whats-the-best-translation-of-the-master-and-margarita/

@olliefern @kimlockhartga @bookstodon @horrorbooks That WAS fascinating, and I guess I need to get another edition and check it out at some point, apparently this one was/is not ideal.

@stina_marie @kimlockhartga @bookstodon @horrorbooks My experience was as if I was reading a completely new book the second time around. It's a wonderful gift, in a way, as it feels like the story can be enjoyed more than once!

@olliefern @stina_marie @bookstodon @horrorbooks I think you are right. I have purchased part of the trilogy to read again.

@olliefern @stina_marie @bookstodon @horrorbooks Mine was an e-book, but I'd love to read each and every translation.

@olliefern @stina_marie @bookstodon @horrorbooks my mind is reeling at the revelation that there's a children's adaptation
