The Beggars were a motley group of rebels who rebelled in the 16th century against Catholic oppression, the Spanish rule of King Philip II and the conservationist government in Brussels. They were the iconoclasts, revolutionaries and pirates who, together with William of Orange, triggered the Eighty Years' War.
