The Wild Huntsman was a Catholic priest in life who slew a sacred stag on Christmas Eve.

There will be a whole bunch of deer- and stag-related stories on my Patreon next month!

KonchogTenzenSangpo,

@juergen_hubert @germany @folklore oh that's something! The one royal animal, king of the forest, valued even above the wild boar... I think the stag / deer is the most important folklore animal.
From a anthropological perspective, after the big cave bears went extinct when the most recent major ice age ended, it was the boar & stag that took over the role. Becoming the shamanic(which during the time evolved towards religious practice) & royal animal.

KonchogTenzenSangpo,

@juergen_hubert @germany @folklore slaying a boar meant conquering & gaining dominion for the ruler (mind Gunther's amulet in the Nibelungenlied)... Whilst the sight and maybe communication with the stag is appreciation from the 'royalty' and well, kingslaying is a trope usually not encouraged in folk tales for obvious reason ^^
