Radio Free Europe journalist detained by Russian authorities over failing to register as "foreign agent"

Alsu Kurmasheva has both Russian and US citizenship and is a resident of Czechia. In late May, she returned to Russia for a family emergency and was detained on 2 June just as she was about to board her flight back to Prague.

Her company Idel.Realii, the Tatarstan and Bashkortostan service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, has been a “foreign agent” since 2017, Kurmasheva has not been given the status herself and Idel.Realii said it was unaware of what their journalist stands accused of.

Family emergency or not, I fail to understand how a journalist – for RFE no less – would consider it in any way sensible to go to Russia.

RedPandaRaider,

Well can’t say much against this one. Radio Free Europe is an old propaganda station, so they indeed are foreign agents.

branchial,

Yeah, there are plenty of better examples of russia cracking down on fair reporting, but any of the “Radio free” stations are directly controlled by the US government with the objective of disrupting so-called adversaries and spreading their brand of propaganda.
