Sitting weird on a book that I enjoyed and it was fine. But also not sure how I feel about finding the author has used exclusively AI art to promote it. I'm not trying to be a Luddite here. Sincerely. My daytime career is in tech. AI is a tool, but used in this way? Feels weird? Curious what @smutstodon and @bookstodon thinks

@ej @smutstodon @bookstodon side note - luddites were not anti tech but anti exploitation

@smutstodon @bookstodon y’all, I feel like I need a whole damn podcast episode to talk about my feels about AI and art.

@ej @smutstodon @bookstodon Interesting question as there are many complex sides to this. If a writer is generating significant income to share, it would be best to support our fellow artists. (I pay for shared stock images now. Commisioning a new, unique image can have a significant cost associated with it.)
If an AI image already exists, there is no copyright and can be used by all. I'm not good at AI image prompts anyhow, but plan to limit my use based on the aforementioned situations.

@ej @smutstodon @bookstodon Since ai is theft, i would be forced to question the author's integrity when i see ai used. After all, if they are complicit in stealing from visual artists, i assume the words are plaigiarism too.
🤷🏽
Truly.

@whatzaname @smutstodon @bookstodon Woof and you touched on something that has crossed my mind. Of course, I don't find it useful to throw accusations without true evidence. The question though lingers.

@ej @smutstodon @bookstodon someone is making money using art they know is stolen (I played with ai art until the first time i saw a watermark and realized wtf I was being complicit in) I don't think it's possible to not realize that another artist got ripped off so an author could save on cover art.
Useful information, in my opinion, when trying to determine if someone's writing is worth supporting.
As an anticapitalist, the whole 'making money' part would be meaningless except that we are trapped together in capitalism. Nothing feels like a worse betrayal than someone who should empathise with fellow artists but who instead capitalizes upon them.

@whatzaname @smutstodon @bookstodon I sincerely would hope that they would know. Sometimes the people of the Internet floor me so I'm only keeping space for the truly blissed out. Regardless though I don't think your sentiments are all that extreme in the greater conversation.

@ej @smutstodon @bookstodon I alternate between blissed out and so fucking pissed I can barely breathe.
I'm trying to spend more time in the in-between phase, but it's tough these days, I gotta say.
