@NarrelleMHarris @bookstodon Hi Narrelle — quick question concerning your field (much respect to writers and editors): what are your thoughts on CHATGPT (apart from the overt mechanical nature of the writing — though I suspect that will upgrade in time)? Very curious to hear your thoughts!

I think AI in general may have some uses (first drafts/outlines) in non-fiction /reports, but so far has proven pretty inaccurate & to me it lacks spark. At this stage I feel a human mind is needed to fact-check & rewrite to make it engaging.

By its nature, it's derivative too. So far AI can only rehash what it's been fed. The AI stuff I've read to date is very dull. It lacks imagination/innovation/human insight, so I don't see any real future for fiction in it.

@NarrelleMHarris @bookstodon It seems obscenely mechanical, each word treated as arithmetic rather than music.

Thanks so much for sharing your insight!

@craig_patrick @bookstodon Beautifully put. Its uses seem very limited to me, especially considering how inaccurate it's turned out to be. The ficiton its generated that I've bothered with so far is flat and flavourless. Thanks for asking! Are you compiling responses to this question? I'm assuming I'm not the only writer/editor you've asked!

@NarrelleMHarris @bookstodon You are. Actually, this was just a random collision with your posts. Frankly, I wish I were thoughtful enough to catalogue these interactions. I was curious about the lens through which The Profession viewed the technology.

For what it’s worth, speaking as a Designer of Things, it feels derivative and unimaginative. Hollow words, though grammatically correct. Strunk & White would be pleased, I suspect. Not impressed, but pleased. 🤔

@craig_patrick @bookstodon Ha! No doubt! I mentor other writers as well, at times, and I've said before there's a big difference between a storyteller and a grammarian. :)
