Chariot mosaic with parrot ~ late C2nd–early C3rd CE

This gorgeous piece was found in
1876 during the construction of Via Nazionale in Rome. It seems to depict a larger-than-life parrot driving a chariot!

Perhaps it was a Triton (or even Neptune) ridding a charriot pulled by a pair of sea-horses, but I'm in peace with this Parrot's theory.

@claudiobrochado @phistorians @histodons @antiquidons @archaeodons more likely parakeets; there's some pulling a chariot in Cologne, so

@PJ_Evans @claujours @phistorians @histodons @antiquidons @archaeodons Monk-parakeet. It's a leader, that one. :ablobcool:

@PJ_Evans @claujours @phistorians @histodons @antiquidons @archaeodons Just kidding. A pair of Rose-ringed Parakeets. This birds' presence in Imperial Rome where due to some kind of an import from the Upper Nile Egypt/ Sudan, i guess.

An import from somewhere, certainly. Maybe with some silk merchants.

@claujours @phistorians @histodons @antiquidons @archaeodons eheheheh touché. Rose-ringed parakeets!
This is obviously a classical theme, I wonder.

@claudiobrochado @histodons @antiquidons @archaeodons the creatures pulling the chariot look to be Capricorni (half goat, half fish)

@phistorians @histodons @antiquidons @archaeodons I’d like to query them how sure they were about that 🦜 interpretation, due to other elements of it. The “horses” in harness do not appear to have rear legs, in fact their forms seem to be blended into a “tail” more akin to dolphins🐬 or 🐋 whales. Hard to be definitive, but perhaps that charioteer is something aquatic?

@Louis_Renault @histodons @antiquidons @archaeodons oh yes, these are capricorni (half goat, half fish) creatures

@phistorians @histodons @antiquidons @archaeodons I knew I had seen them before a long time ago. Thanks 😊 for putting a name to them. And, if they’re half-goat, I suppose a parrot could tell them where to go, as well as a catfish.
