Rentlar, to britishcolumbia in Two Years After a Deadly Crane Collapse, BC Considers Safety Improvements | The Tyee

It always takes deaths or severe injuries before regulators realize the need to codify safety regulations. Safety rules are written is blood, as they say. Almost anything you think of that might be common sense, like “don’t stick your hand near a giant saw blade”, or “don’t enter a garbage compactor that’s in operation”, were put in because something like that happened at one point or another.

“normal”

corsicanguppy,

Yep. A qualifier I do believe was inserted so the employer could be the sole arbiter of whether and when to outsource work. This under-mining was a scumbag effort, and I support the costly outage the employer caused. In a country where we acknowledge a bad comma can cost a million dollars on a contract, this qualifier was huge.

ZC3rr0r,

Yeah, it feels like an intentional vagueness the employer can use to arbitrarily and unilaterally decide what constitutes work. It gives off an unpleasant hint of negotiating in bad faith.

kae, to britishcolumbia in In Victoria Hospitals, A ‘Critical Lack’ of Staff | The Tyee

This isn’t unique to Victoria. This is the reality everywhere.

The situation has been developing for 10 years, and a critical lack of underfunding for front line staff, training for new staff, and adherence to staff/ratio is the culprit. Nurses are overworked, where it’s not uncommon for the normal ward nurses to not be 4:1, but 8:1+. It’s unsafe for the patients, and if they have more than one patient that is anything more than stable, it spins out of control quickly.

Meanwhile, every health authority I’ve seen has layers upon layers of middle management. Managers for managers. Their offices take away space from actual beds, and their salaries outstrip most front line staff.

So the nurses that are there are seeing an increased injury rate, a skyrocketing burnout rate, and we continue to circle the drain. It’s going to take a lot of political will and time to pull out of this.

Thanks for posting this - our children both have extra physical needs, but thankfully our school district is well funded and has extra support for them. I wish that their non-government funding didn’t make so much of a difference to the children’s education.

Even so, the kids start late, get sent home early, and are excluded from a lot of the educational content, despite interest.

Smk, to britishcolumbia in On Kelowna and Transphobia, from a Queer Grandpa’s Heart | The Tyee

The cisgender-centred power around this story ignored the background of why this happened and the immense, traumatic impact on the trans community. I am only aware of one media organization that interviewed a person from the local trans community. And we must ask ourselves the question, would the outrage have been the same if the girl had been trans?

Unfortunately, the answer is no.

The answer is no because a lot of people feel like having transwomen in a women competition is not fair. That said, it wouldn’t matter in this case because this is 9-10 byears old sport event.

This whole article is baiting major outrage because a man decided to be an asshole. This kind of article is the reason why so many people are a less and less sympathetic to LGBTQ stuff.

Apropos of nothing, never forget that it's often better to just block TERFs and transphobes than to engage with them.
