simply_surprise, to nostupidquestions in is there a useful way for tech workers to express interest in a union? In USA.
@simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml avatar

At a glance, the Teamsters and IWW might have some resources for tech worker unions.

I think, if you wanted to push for a union in your workplace, someone who actually works there would have to lead the charge with signature collection etc.

simply_surprise, to asklemmy in Americans who believe in Socialism, if you were given the opportunity to immigrate to a country with socialist policies, would you?
@simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml avatar

I’d emigrate to the DPRK if I could, and if they’d take me.

It costs something like $3,000 to renounce U$ citizenship, and that’s only if you’re able to get citizenship somewhere else.

Even for the few people with skills in demand elsewhere, it’s prohibitively expensive.

He wasn’t the most recent returned, or returned in a coffin. Not sure that OP is referring to him.

Bruce Lowrance was returned in good health in 2018.

Here, let’s do a litmus test. Who is to blame for the Ukraine War? Would you decry the US if they falsely claimed to own most of the Gulf of Mexico and threatened civilian ships? If so, would you also decry China for claiming most of the South China Sea, including waters which are literally closer to other countries than to them?

I get that it’s a convenient rhetorical technique to try to turn the conversation onto the views common among communists that you find objectionable. I don’t agree that it’s relevant to the conversation at hand, though.

Every communist is not a tankie.

The thread of “authoritarian” communism that’s typically branded as “tankie” runs directly to Marx. I’m interested to know if you’re able to find any non-marxist communist tendencies to hold up as an example.

Where are your model communists? Or are you just anti-communist?

simply_surprise, to fediverse in Is lemmy.ml turn into authoritarian?
@simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml avatar

I don’t really agree. Stalin’s thoughts can be summed up in his synthesis of Marx and Lenin. There isn’t a “Stalinism” separate from Marxism-leninism, but his contribution to MLism was vital.

I also don’t really agree that Dengism is a thing. It’s a convenient shorthand Maoists use to describe modern China, but I don’t think Deng saw his contributions as separate from SWCC.

Also also, I don’t think you can fairly characterize modern Maoism as Mao’s interpretation of MLism.

All of these are very pedantic, so it’s very much ok if we don’t agree here! 😁

The “Communist Manifesto” was written by the guy who said “We have no compassion and we ask no compassion from you. When our turn comes, we shall not make excuses for the terror.”

A non-marxist who just wanted a commune would be something like a Utopian Communalist, or something like that.

@simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml avatar

It’s just a pejorative for Marxist-leninists/communists/“authoritarian communists”.

The lemmy platform was built by communists, and there’s a couple of active instances of communists on lemmy.

simply_surprise, to fediverse in Is lemmy.ml turn into authoritarian?
@simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Marxism-leninism was first synthesized by Stalin. Stalinism isn’t a thing, but Stalin was a Marxist-leninist. Stalin was a Communist. Marx was an authoritarian communist as well.

“tankie” is just a red-scare pejorative for communists.

No, he just failed to account for people.

What do you mean by this?

Marx is more hard-line than Stalin.

If they’re both “tankies”, then I think we’re clear that the term is just base red-scare anti-communism.

Edit: “sealioning is when I have to defend arguments I’ve repeated but don’t actually understand”
