Revolution might not be televised, but apparently genocide will be mathwashed.
From the team behind "we kill people based on metadata", a new exciting project: "we kill people based on… we don't even know what, it's a 2bln parameters black box that we have no real way of actually understanding."
@rysiek If there's anything left on your bucket list, get a wiggle on and get it done.
Fry bread. It's high time I made fry bread.
Yeah, my ambitions run large.
So wait building all these "secure" chat apps on a browser engine packaged in a thin layer of UI, with its insane number of dependencies and the gigantic, immense attack surface that this entails, was somehow a bad idea?
Who knew! Who could have foreseen this! Shocking, really.
Dear #Fediverse I remember there being some screenshots comparing the data collected by #Facebook, #Instagram, :birdsite: and the official #Mastodon iOS apps somewhere, but I cannot for the life of me find them.
I wonder if the whole #AI thing will finally convince artists that modern #copyright regime was never meant to protect them.
It was meant to protect the middlemen. The Amazons, the Spotifies, the Sonys, the Disneys. The film studios, the publishing houses.
Now the middlemen figured out they own basically all of art, and that they can just train a computer on that, to replace artists with a piece of software.
And then stop paying artists even the pittance they were being paid so far.
@rysiek If you consider Audiobook Narrators to be artists and audiobooks to be art (I do, honestly, on both counts), then here is a link to my catalogue of high heat audiobooks:
@AdaraAstin I absolutely do consider audiobooks art and audiobook narrators artists. Many books get a completely new shine, new depth, in an audiobook version!
Based on the-federation.info, it looks like over the last ~3 days #Fediverse added about four BlueSky's worth of active users. :blobcatgiggle:
That spike there is roughly 800k monthly active accounts.
Obviously measuring this is difficult, and there are weird bumps like the one about a month ago (visible on the chart), but this time it is confirmed by other metrics sources.
Not all of #NewHere will stay, just like in previous waves. But many will. And it will make fedi more diverse and fun. 🎉
I want a usable de-Googled phone OS. I like /e/OS's Nextcloud integration, but CalyxOS seems to be more up-to-date (already on Android 13, where /e/OS is Android 12). CalyxOS also makes it easier to re-lock the bootloader.
There's a lot of shit flying in the #Fediverse lately and a lot of times perspective seems to get lost. Yes, there are things we need to talk about, and yes there are things we will not agree on. And that's okay.
But leave the pitchforks and torches out of this.
Fedi admins put in the hours and effort and emotion into making fedi happen. Sometimes they make decisions we might not agree with. We should criticize, but we should not pile-on.
There is a need for a longer conversation about the stuff that the kerfuffle relates to.
But it has to be a conversation, not a shouting match. People are throwing accusations and making conjectures that have nothing to do with reality!
And we need to be able to have this conversation without pushing out people most engaged in maintaining the infrastructure we use to have this conversation.
There is a way to do all that, but for that we need to take a step back, and take a deep breath.
And to make this abundantly clear… regardless of how much you disagree with a person and how much you feel their decisions might be wrong:
👉 harassment is harassment, and is unacceptable
👉 calling for harm is calling for harm, and is unacceptable
👉 pile-ons are pile-ons, and are unacceptable
People who engage in that sort of thing are like locusts. They join a community, destroy it, and move on.
If you care about fedi, push back against that, even if it targets someone you disagree with.
