I’m not sure it was a good idea to hand this review to Michael Damiani who admitted in one of recent EZA podcasts that he didn’t play through Skyrim or Fallout 4. I think it’s quite important context and it kind of shows.

Did he? I honestly don’t know. I assume he’d mention it along Skyrim and F4.

Also, NV was done by Obsidian. Sure, it’s got some Bethesda flavor in it by virtue of using Fallout 3 base but is more similar to old Black Isle entries.

I have no idea how they are counting it but I think there might be a grain of truth to this. iPhone users don’t choose iMessage specifically, it’s the default when texting other iPhone users. But how many people in Europe use SMS these days? It’s all WhatsApp, Messenger etc.

It’s automatically replacing SMS when texting iPhone users and supports plenty of modern features like group chats, embedding media etc. iMessage has an actual stranglehold in the US where teenagers have to use it not to be left out from their social circles (group chats are pretty much broken for anyone not using it). So called green bubble (SMS) vs blue bubble (iMessage) puts pressure since it’s a bit of a status symbol too.

If the same was happening in the EU it would make sense to scrutinize it under new regulation. I’d wage 90% wouldn’t notice if their messages were delivered as plain SMS though.

Interestingly, new minister is Rustem Umerov, a Crimean Tatar, previously cooperating with Turkey on housing for Crimean Tatars displaced after 2014 invasion of Ukraine.

While I doubt this is the reason why he’s chosen, the timing of the announcement is a bit symbolic as Turkey restarts grain deal negotiations tomorrow. Turkey has been active in safeguarding interests of Crimean Tatars.

There’s been some corruption scandal in defense ministry with deputy minister being dismissed recently IIRC. Reznikov supposedly held on by the skin of his teeth so it was probably a matter of time until he got replaced.

Not to detract from his accomplishments of course but Ukraine is in the middle of accelerated transformation to European norms in this regard and it was bound to generate some friction.

This Shorts issue seems to have measurable, constant and immediate effect in ad revenue and therefore platform profitability. Bad content moderation may or may not decrease engagement but in the end Google is a commercial enterprise that’s looking at the numbers at hand.

I simply prefer TikTok for short form videos due to unique community and reasonably entertaining algorithm.

I enjoy YouTube to the point of paying for Premium but I hate that my YouTube subscriptions feed on TV is littered with shorts that I have no way of disabling other than hiding them one by one (which I do to make a point).

Suits at Google will try to shove it into everyone’s throats until they get bored and someone adds it to killedbygoogle.com so why would anyone even bother with it.

Are you alright there mate?

It does cite internal metrics on ad revenues going down for three consecutive quarters due to lower potential to show ads in short videos compared to longer ones. It’s anonymous and doesn’t give solid figures but that’s what this article is about.

I’m deep in Apple ecosystem and unfortunately this is not an option on Apple TV as far as I know.

In case of Apple TV, it’s the smoothest TV software experience, leaps and bounds above any ad-ridden smart TV or aging Nvidia Shield. I used Android TV and it’s just jank. For a time I had HTPC with Kodi too, it’s been relegated to hosting Plex and downloading stuff from Usenet. I enjoyed freedom to install anything but ultimately this didn’t outweight better audio codec support on Apple TV.

Not sure what you’re making a stab at.

Apple software is obviously ad free and I have no problem with paying for YouTube Premium due to value it provides. Some good soul on Lemmy also recommended me a way to block sponsored content via isponsorblocktv which is a script that runs on my server and skips sponsored segments by reading YouTube app state and sending fast forward commands like a remote would.

I called smart TVs ad-ridden, might have been bad wording on my part.

Dutch ASML is essential to 7nm and smaller processes. US pitched in enormous amounts of cash in very risky R&D for EUV lithography so they have a say in how it’s used but I wouldn’t say they control it entirely.

These things are too risky, complex and expensive for any single country/federation or economic block to be on the cutting edge. It’s entirely possible to pour money for years and come up empty.

EU should pull as many strings as possible to have cutting edge production capacity within own borders in case of emergency but first we’d have to invest heavily in education of engineers and guarantee competitive salaries because it’s incredibly challenging work.

It took Taiwan a generation to accomplish and even now their manufacturing staff is being poached by China because of economic pressures and likely state funded corporate espionage.

Why are people hyped about RSS regaining relevance? (lemmy.world)

According to Google Trends, during the past few years, there has been nothing but a few minor bumps that faded away as quickly as they came. I love RSS because i do not have to scroll through dozens of different news sites all day and i would love it to return....

Clickbait is obviously an issue with many media outlets but given that you curate your RSS feeds you can just dump them. Once reddit died I made plenty of changes to my media diet. It left me with way less sources but I’m certain all I lost was low quality reporting and other kinds of outrage bait.

Even though I pay for a handful of streaming services I’m subscribed via RSS to a pirate scene releases log. If something catches my eye, which doesn’t really happen all that often, I add it to Radarr which downloads it to my home server / Plex. Other times me or my girlfriend add movies to Radarr due to word of mouth or some other reason.

This library is basically stuff we have an interest in watching so when we’re up for watching something it doesn’t take long to choose.
