macallik, to linux in First days with daily driving Linux

I'm in the same boot. Wrapping up my first week of dual booting (for me it's KDE via Debian 12).

With Firefox, I encountered the same issue. After adjusting the resolution scaling, it is back to normal/expected, so give that a shot if your distro allows it.

macallik, to reddit in Libreddit and Teddit are practically dead

Ahhh yeah, my bad, it's libredirect

macallik, to nostupidquestions in Do you use the swipe to type feature on your phone?

Thanks for linking! Currently using OpenBoard to get away from Swiftkey's privacy issues, but OpenBoard's lack of swipe has been a hard adjustment. FlorisBoard is en route to swipe tho it's still very much in beta (but feels like alpha with the current implementation)

Go to the settings, ping the instances, and add a handful with good ping.

I cycle through 3-4 instances using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Alt + L is the default but you can change it via your brower's extension settings) and usually find one that's up and running.

macallik, to nostupidquestions in Does anyone use Bing for their search engine?

Same. Privacy was trumped by the environment (still use blockers tho)

macallik, to nostupidquestions in Does anyone use Bing for their search engine?

Ecosia.org too

macallik, to privacyguides in Noob Question: If you aren't willing to deal with custom OSes like Linux (for computers) and Android Custom Roms (for phones), do you just not have any privacy at all?

I took the same plunge this week. I partitioned 125 GB to Windows and the remaining 350GB to Debian 12. I was making do w/ a 240 GB SSD previously so it's overkill, but I like the idea of disincentivizing my W11 usage by limiting the space available.

For me, there's still some workflows that need to be optimized in Debian, but overall I'm slowly transitioning towards it as my main driver.

macallik, to nostupidquestions in When a Flight Data Recorder/Cockpit Voice Recorder is found, they are often taken on a plane and flown to an investigation headquarters. But what if the plane carrying those black boxes crash?

I am not an expert, but I don't think there's a "good for one crash" stamp or anything on the recorders, so I'd imagine that since they're made as indestructible as possible, they could survive multiple plane crashes

macallik, to nostupidquestions in Wouldn't one be able to view Threads' content using other Lemmy client?

Yes you would be able to few the content that is similar to our content here as well.

I do think a better way to think of it is Mastodon & Kbin though.. You can definitely interact w/ toots on Kbin which stands out when compared to Lemmy. However, when compared to the Mastodon, the experience is not nearly as integrated enough to warrant using it as a replacement.

Based on what I heard on the Hard Fork podcast (where they interviewed Adam Mosseri), I think the plan is to build Thread-specific UI/UX experiences/features that go beyond the average ActivityPub client currently.

We would be able to read the threads, but we wouldn't get access to any additional functionality built on top of the ActivityPub structure unless we replicated their code base.

macallik, to kbinMeta in Navigating kbin be like

That's the gist for most ppl I think, but my guess is the logic was thrown off initially when only boosts counted towards reputation

macallik, to politics in The cringiest presidential campaign ad video you will ever see, courtesy of Ron DeSantis

The spliced body builder near the end reminded me of a tamer version of the Fight Club spliced frame.

macallik, to technology in Podcast app Stitcher is shutting down in August

I was a power user back in the day, but once I started using PocketCasts, that's all she wrote. RIP tho

macallik, (edited ) to linux in Red Hat’s commitment to open source: A response to the git.centos.org changes

I agree as well. People are well within their rights to refrain from using current/future products completely and voice their frustration, but there's also this undercurrent of people who want to be as vitriolic as possible and try to twist the knife on the way out of the door. It reeks of insecurity and an inability to regulate their emotions.

There's a kind of similar undercurrent/echo chamber in certain areas of the fediverse around Reddit as well, and I say this is a person who was actively using teddit pre-APIgate and has drastically reduced my reddit-browsing time as of late. Changing all of your comments to expletives about the current CEO is not as revolutionary or well-received as most people think it is

macallik, to technology in Mastodon's Eugen Rochko in talks with Meta?!😱

I personally think it's a bad idea, but I will try to judge the action instead of the person given how dedicated he likely is to the fediverse in general

macallik, to technology in BookWyrm is the Federated GoodReads Replacement I Didn’t Know I Needed

I was able to follow my bookworym account on mastodon, but not sure how to use my existing accounts w/i bookwyrm. I think the functionality doesn't translate well to other fediverse products w/ different setups... kinda like trying to interact w/ tweets (posts?) via lemmy
