A Shining, by Jon Fosse. You drive to the end of a road and hike into a Norwegian forest in winter, where you become lost and may die but your brain meanders casually over many topics until some presences show up which really don’t help much, so your brain keeps thinking random thoughts. 4 of 5 library cats 🐈 🐈 🐈 🐈

@kenthompson @bookstodon I read this book — sat on a bench & did not leave until I finished— even when it started to drizzle rain. An incandescent book

I re-read this after 35 years—and found it to be action-packed, baroque, philosophical, freakishly inventive, and utterly hilarious.

@oarditi @bookstodon interesting! Why reread after 35 years— very cool! I find that exciting because there seems to be a mysterious quality in repetition. I enjoy rereading books as well.

i The Possessed by Elif Batuman now. i thought it was a non fiction about literature, but it turned out to be more of a memoir of an academic, and she got a sense of humour 😁
Elif's luggage was lost on her way to Yasnaya Polyana and she had to attend a Tolstoy conference in loungewear. it would be even funnier if she wore a hoodie instead of a shirt – hoodie is called "tolstovka" in russian, after, you guessed it, Tolstoy 🤓

@tishkova @bookstodon I read her book, The Idiot this summer. I need to read this one as well. She has an amazing mind & insight. I also read that New Yorker piece you mentioned. Thanks!

@tishkova @bookstodon — she came to my city this Spring to promote the paperback release of The Idiot’s sequel— Either/Or. It was an amazing conversation/book talk!

I have to admit, I feel like if you’ve seen one cave you’ve seen them all

@Gargron there is plenty for the imagination— thanks for sharing. Love this book about exploring underground places: https://www.amazon.com/Underland-Deep-Journey-Robert-Macfarlane/dp/0393242145
