Kayleigh Donaldson (better known as @CeilidhAnn on twitter), on Nora Roberts "the undisputed queen of (genre) romance" for Paste Magazine.
(ETA because I am that person: this is a paean meant to celebrate La Nora's birthday, so there are no mentions of how white and relentlessly hetero her work is, or the copaganda, or or or.)
Could you help me? I'm looking for very specific rec for a friend who's not here.
They're looking for genre romances with three things:
1- available as audiobooks
2- main characters are at least 35 or older (45+ preferable)
3- Set at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and/or New Year (not inspirational/Christian fiction though)
I looked through our database, and I'm sadly not coming up with anything that meets all three criteria (including several sexy santa books with older protags that are not on audio). I'll keep my eye out though!
Alex Norris has been giving us all joy and giggles with their lovely pink blob for a long time; for many years now, they've been fighting a legal battle with a shitty publisher that has pulled an outrageous rights grab.
Alex have a fundraising deadline on Monday October 9th to continue fighting for their rights. Can you help? No amount is too small.
Beware a white woman writing YA with Black girl protagonists, while pulling shit like this--and because most of her audience are also white people, she gets away with her #racist stereotypes and sells better than Black women writing authentically.
Genre romance historian Steve Ammidown: Lest we forget: remembering three members of the romance community lost to domestic violence in the late 1990s.
Was someone grumbling because you borrowed some books? I wish people wouldn't do that... People who borrow books can often afford to read many more books than they otherwise would-- a very good outcome
That said, the recent increase in KU's fee did not go to KU authors; compensation for reads have tested their lowest rates ever over the summer
Yeah, tell me about it (the low pay). I'm a KU author and I'm just... I don't want to go wide, because just the thought of having to do all the marketing etc myself is wrenching, but KU's just... not paying.
(Admittedly, I do need to poke my ads, but... :whine:)
This one is important for everyone living in the U.S.: the Federal Communications Commission finally has all five seats, and now they're taking on restoring #NetNeutrality.
Someone at Felon's site just reminded me of this, and my friends @romancelandia, I had to share it with you.
Prepare to laugh and cry and laugh some more (especially if you read a lot of 1980s and 1990s romance...but really, any romance, some tropes will never die)
@herhandsmyhands I read historical romance, and most of those things are in there - especially the lock of hair falling into the eyes, and the crooked smile. @romancelandia
I loved T.E. Kinsey's A Quiet Life in the Country, the first in the Lady Hardcastle mysteries; it's very white, and very Edwardian British, but also very good.
