A clear case of an indirect #speechact 👉
Me very kindly taking my sister to the station by car, despite having better things to do on a Sunday morning. My sister: “Are you tired? Do you want me to drive?”. Real meaning: “You suck at driving please let me do it” @linguistics #linguistics

@eugenia_diegoli @linguistics How do you know the real meaning?

eugenia_diegoli,
@eugenia_diegoli@sciences.social avatar

@Rainer_Rehak @linguistics the “assumption of intent” is tricky indeed! In this case specifically, I know my sister very well and, to be fair, driving is not my thing :)

“Playing” with a subcorpus extracted from a larger Q&A web corpus. I wanted to do some KW analysis, but the potential reference corpora at my disposal were too different to allow for any meaningful comparison - they foregrounded differences in mode/genre. Then it came to me that the best corpus to compare it with may be a second subcorpus from the very same dataset. Meaningful differences can indeed stand out only against a background of sameness. @linguistics

I’ve recently received a peer review overall positive and very informative, but critising precisely my use of the verbs “to try” and “to attempt” because, according to the reviewer, “not adequate in academic writing”. Here’s a reminder of why we should value transparency and why framing our methods in terms of attempts and intentions can actually be a good thing.

@elmerot @eugenia_diegoli @_bydbach_ @linguistics @academicchatter And I have just intentionally put the word "attempt" into the book chapter I am writing on blended learning 😁.

Writing something on of communication and linguistic . Some of the questions I’d like to explore are: how do ideologies construe and are reinforced by online metadiscourses around linguistic mistakes? Do users negotiate/problematise/resist dominant ideologies? How do ideologies relate to ?
Reading suggestions appreciated.

If I survive the 8 hour FlixBus, tomorrow I’ll be talking about #laughter at the #ADDA4 panel Emotions in Digital Discourses! I’m really looking forward to it @academicchatter @linguistics

In 2022 I was invited to contribute to an edited collection that was supposed to come out within the year. That obv didn’t happen, and I still don’t have a prospective publication date. I feel so frustrated and I regret not sending the piece to a journal. Anyone else with a similar experience? @academicchatter

@_bydbach_ @academicchatter thank you Rita is nice to hear the other side!! I guess what’s bothering me the most is the total absence of updates and explanations from the editor

Coocho,
@Coocho@lingo.lol avatar

@eugenia_diegoli @academicchatter it was upsetting in the beginning because it was very early in my career. But as publications accumulate, any single one doesn’t really matter that much, so you just forget about the ones that take long!
In your case, sounds like you can officially withdraw and resubmit elsewhere tbh

@academicch @psychology @linguistics Interesting the bit arguing that public apologies may be doomed from the start. Also, I wasn’t aware of the taxonomy of apology strategies in psychology, but it looks to me it resembles very closely the one proposed in linguistics by Blum-Kulka and colleagues.

The #CADScamp23 came to a close today. Three days of talks, hands-on sessions and informal knowledge sharing. I loved every second of it and feel extremely humbled and grateful. The stunning view of Bertinoro was the cherry on the cake!

Delighted (and a little daunted!) to have just signed the contract for conducting research on #Hoey ‘s #LexicalPriming theory and its application to Japanese at the University of Bologna! It’s rather a leap from (im)politeness, but all the more exciting. Any reading suggestions on previous studies on the topic are more than welcome

Anyone familiar with previous studies on #laughter in written online communication?Everything from emoji (😂) to textual representation of laughter sounds (haha)! All I can find examines (co-present) laughter almost exclusively as a by-product of humour. Thank you! #academicchatter #academicmastodon @linguistics @academicchatter

In the process that led to the book proposal I found “From dissertation to book” (W. Germano) incredibly helpful. Any advice on how to make a #book out of your dissertation? Reading suggestions? Survival skills needed? #academicchatter @academicchatter @linguistics

I finally submitted what I hope is the final version of my application for the fellowship, which is basically everything I’ve been doing since I’ve received my PhD in June. Now the real challenge begins: waiting and dealing with uncertainty 😂 Anyone else applying for funding under the MSCA? @academicchatter @mscactions
