On April 26, 1986, the infamous explosion at a Chernobyl nuclear power plant unleashed large amounts of radiation into the atmosphere, an event that contaminated wildlife across country lines. The radiation levels seen in animals as a result has decreased in recent years — with the exception of one animal: the wild boar.
Interesting, so its from nuclear weapon testing. Should this not impact boar population in more countries then? Is the deer truffle only found in Central Europe? Are other countries checking their radioactive levels?
I know that the idea that its the differing diet of wild boar compared to other animals has been mentioned to me as a source many years ago. But its curious that the source of the radioactive isotopes is not what we expected. Lets see if radioactivity goes up as predicted due to cesium diffusion rates through soil
We had a busy week but managed to meet up with some friends this weekend and played some Everdell with 4 players - it was a good game and a tight race with the top 3 players all differing only by 1 point each. I think its a solid game which is a more complex gateway game into the world of boardgames. Its almost more complicated to explain vs playing
We also played Secret Valley which is a neat little card drafting and laying game. Each card has certain victory conditions to score points and during drafting you select on card and pass on the rest to the player next to you until you just get the final card left over from your neighbor. Each player will have 5 cards with differing victory conditions. You the start laying down the cards in a 4x4 grid layer, one card per player at a time. The cards usually score points based on what kind of cards are around them and you will try to maximize your own score while diminishing your opponents. Its a fun little game that can be played in 20min
We also played Ark Nova in a two player session, still the best game :)
Thank you for the explanation :) I totally understand your point. For me the most important aspect is if its fun, if it fits into a specific category or not is secondary in this case :)
While we also use Kallax for this purpose, we did not go with a 5x5, we went with individual units of 4x1 and 2x1. We attached them to the wall in rows the 4x1 at the top, some space, one 2x1, some space and another 2x1 with doors. It opens the option to store things on top of the units itself. We usually used it a bit like a display for the games we played most.
I have been tinkering around a game idea and have developed some of the components and even play-tested some parts on Table Top Simulator. However, when it comes to balancing and creating the economy I am having difficulty coming up with a good workflow. I was wondering if there is any good resource for game creators. Maybe some...
hmmm… never though of it like that. Thanks a lot for the write up. The game is rather complex, this might be very difficult to do but I will tinker around a bit. It makes it also a big more rigid when it comes to changing some aspect of the game but could really help in getting the economy just right. I need someone to do my job during the day so I can work on this :D
Has anyone played this “new” Everdell? It went entirely under my radar but it looks… extremely similar to the original. Is it just a reskin with some slight modifications?...
In anticipation of this years Essen Spiel 2023, which games have you played last week? Any nice discoveries, interesting mechanisms, reviews, warnings and experiences are all welcome!
We played some more Castles of Burgundy with two players, it was a tight race with only 2 point difference!
We also played some Exploding Kittens with 5 and I will never like this game. Its super random and not enjoyable.
We also played a 5-player game of 7 Wonders which was a bit chaotic because we had not played it for a long time. Its still a good game for the casual crowd (better than exploding kittens for sure)
We also played one 2-player game of Ark Nova. Still enjoy every game as much as the last
Customs agents were alarmed at their discovery last August at Dulles International Airport: an undeclared cooler packed in a suitcase and filled with 10 test tubes of an unknown yellowish substance, brought to the U.S. by a woman claiming to be a Russian scientist....
This sentencing is so non-sense because it rather shows how the legislation for scientific samples is often not really there or sensible.
During my PhD I was working on rather obscure marine invertebrate animals called Bryozoan. To any normal person they look like some algea or plant matter. I had to collect live specimens and transport them from one European country to another by airplane. If I would follow proper procedure I would need a vet check the health status of the animals at departure and arrival. No vet ever has looked at a bryozoan much less has any clue on how to access their health. So the conclusion was to simply throw them in a cooler and hand this in as the luggage. When asked whats in the cooler I just said „mostly water“.
Almost everyone in the academic community would frequently transport DNA, RNA, Antibodies, Animals and other unique samples by just placing it in the luggage. There is hardly any real alternative in an industry that is strapped for money (basic research is almost always poor)
I swear I’m smart and have pretty ok reading comprehension…but when I pick up a new game I have the hardest time understanding the rules and mechanics by just reading the instructions. Watching videos is helpful but I still really only pick it up while playing the game and going through the motions....
I think it depends. Some game instructions are easy enough to understand on their own. However, more often than not I need a video breaking it down. My recent pickup of mint imperium sits idle because the rules provided are terrible and the videos online are not any better.
Whenever I have trouble getting back into a game I like to make my own setup and rules summary to make it easier in the future. These are intended for myself only so they take shortcuts and make assumptions about how I think about the setup and play and even our typical player count (2). I will share an example in a comment....
I have not done any personalized rules, setup or play reminders. So far it has been enough just learning the game. We tend to play the same games a lot before committing to a new one and that usually helps to cement the details. Sometimes I need a tiny refresher which I usually go to the handbook fore.
I have been playing the Steam game for some hours. It got a bit stale after a while but I still enjoyed it. It is interesting that you find the boardgame better than the original, will have to have a look into it :)
We are currently still on the road and played more of Castles of Burgundy. We played a four player and a three player round which were a bit grueling because one of the players always took ages to make up their mind on what to do.
We also managed to squeeze in Ark Nova on the weekend. As always, a two player match which was fun but my gf is always very disappointed when she looses. This is not typical for her but I think it has something to do that you can end up having negative points. Sadly, its still my favorite game.
The first game can be long but now it takes us around 1.5 to 2 hours. The game is amazing but more complex. My SO often just wings it and in many games this can work well. I think this is much harder to do in Ark Nova
please feel free to start something like that. We could call it “On Sale Sunday” and share any deals we have found. Would be best if people also mention which region this is for.
We had a very busy week and only managed to squeeze in one game of Ark Nova. It remains my favorite game for two players.
We also had some family over with whom we played some games before even though they are not that much into boardgames. They usually play lighter Euros like 7Wonders Duel of the like. We introduced them to Castles of Burgundy. It was a gruesomely long game, at least 3.5 hours. In particular one of the relatives was stuck in analysis paralysis for a long time. Even though he was the last player, it felt like he did all the thinking when his turns start. However, Burgundy remains a really strong game and I usually just try to reach at least 200 points towards the end of the game.
The good thing was, since the game lasted until 2am, we had the prime-time window for the Peresid Metero Shower which was really spectacular. One was so strong that its tail remained visible for much longer than normal ones and was not a thin streak but more a thick line tapering on both ends. We also spotted Andromeda with our Binos.
I have a Celestron C71256 10 x 50 and if the night is dark Andromeda is visible like a big smudge in the sky. I like to use the Great Square of Pegasus to find it. In fact Andromeda lies kinda smack in the middle between Perseus and Pegasus
