cbontenbal, to philosophy Dutch

I find myself not understanding the concept of atheism. Who wants to explain it to me in a coherent way for a beginner? With a metaphysical substantiation please, if that is at all possible.

@philosophy

@Drew @philosophy I believe there is a ground of being. And that seems reasonable to me.

@smithkm @philosophy That's a clear description. But are those two beliefs coherent with each other?

@philippsteinkrueger @Drew @philosophy What if I use the concept of Intellect, like Aristotle did?

@Drew @philippsteinkrueger @philosophy The tricky thing is that God is difficult to define because it is a metaphorical concept. I would define him/her/they/it (in line with certain traditions) as the transcendent ground of being.

@philippsteinkrueger @Drew @philosophy I'm trying to figure out how the atheist defines god.

@Drew @philippsteinkrueger @philosophy I thought I would get this response. I'm curious what metaphysics the atheist uses.

@petersuber @Drew @philippsteinkrueger @philosophy "Evidence" is a term that is especially applicable within science. Within philosophy I doubt whether that is a useful term.
Would you mind explaining how atheism and epistemology are related?

@jchaven @philosophy I don't know who told you about God, but that person didn't understand much of it.

@whotookkarl @Drew @philippsteinkrueger @philosophy Is epistemology possible at all?

cbontenbal,
@cbontenbal@mastodon.social avatar

@SusanHR @philosophy Agree. I take it you don't believe in the existence of good or evil at all?

cbontenbal,
@cbontenbal@mastodon.social avatar

@Jakra @philosophy In a certain sense, I do believe in all gods. In believe there is a transcendent reality.

@HappyHeathen @philosophy This is a derogatory comment that is too emotional for reasonable discussion for my taste. Please try again! 🙂

@lxvtnii @Drew @philippsteinkrueger @philosophy Thank you for this substantive response. You are one of the few who respond substantively.

@msteenhagen @spencer @philippsteinkrueger @Drew @philosophy You hit the nail on the head. My question should have been more specific, although I wonder whether the average fellow man sees himself as a naturalist or nihilist.
To start with those two: is naturalism or nihilism rationally defensible according to you?
