Squarely middle aged guy who has managed to consistently evolve. I hate labels, but I do think of myself as being a freethinker. Into philosophy, social theory, science, and anything else secular that helps bring to focus what the universe, and our place in it, is all about. I mute anyone posting about what they ate today, how they feel today, who they hate today, or anything else having to do with personal, mundane details of their lives. No offense. I'm just not here for that.

I find myself not understanding the concept of atheism. Who wants to explain it to me in a coherent way for a beginner? With a metaphysical substantiation please, if that is at all possible.

@cbontenbal @philosophy I don't view atheism as a concept. It's a position, much like one would take if someone came to you professing a belief in unicorns. You would (or, perhaps, should) reject their belief if they made the claim without supplying empirical evidence. No further comment is required. The burden of proof is on the person who believes in unicorns, nobody else. I suppose this is hard to see for those who believe. For the atheist, it's pretty straightforward.

@dingodog19 @cbontenbal @philosophy Oh, for sure. I view myself as agnostic for exactly that reason. Oftentimes, "I don't know" is really your best choice.
