Yet another step toward end game capitalism where nothing’s free/affordable anymore and only way to consume basic entertainment is either through a paid service or absolutely ridiculous ads everywhere. Where CEOs are squeezed by shareholders for every last extra % in their returns and in turn makes their product as anti consumer as possible except for the top 1% that can afford it.
What’s to stop a single Lemmy instance from going “this is taking too much time and money to run, I’m shutting this server down”? I guess that can apply to any service, but monetization sometimes prevents that from happening. But in this case it’s all volunteer work and running a server takes resources.
What happens to all the users created under that Lemmy instance?
Two things worth checking with your local theater: they may have cheaper viewings on Tuesdays, and look for any rewards program that will most likely waive your convenience fees on top of earning points. Points make your drink/concession purchases much more reasonable.
We SHOULDN’T have to do this, but until something better comes along, these are ok alternatives.
