Ok, if you're in a book club and the book really doesn't speak to you...do you force yourself to finish it?

Maybe a result of being in the middle of a lengthy and serious writing project, but I've bounced out of a lot of books this year, and a lot of them have been from book club. Maybe I should be pushing myself more, but this isn't grad school, so...I don't know.

@Narayoni @pretensesoup @bookstodon It took me a long time to learn to do this, but I agree. There are more books I'll enjoy than I shall ever have time to read.

Mind you, I also feel that if you haven't read the book you shouldn't turn up to the book club that discusses it, and I'm clearly in a minority there.

It’s hard to shake the notion that return to office policies aren’t the result of a prisoner’s dilemma related to commercial real estate.

If people stop needing to drive to downtown office buildings to work, that causes them to be less valuable. This is a meaningful financial loss if you own the building.

So everyone who owns commercial real estate has a financial stake in office buildings continuing to be used and hence valuable.

@carnage4life That's not a prisoner's dilemma, just normal price fixing, surely?

Someone asked me about my favorite film directors, and I've realized the list is way too white, hetero, and male!

So, if you have a suggestion about movies directed by, women, people of color, lgbtq+, please let me know. Suggestions of a good movie or two that represents their work well, would also be appreciated, thanks!

@RickiTarr I like Strange Days and The Hurt Locker but I sometimes get the impression Bigelow got into Directors' Club by showing she could shout at people just like the boys. Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), definitely interested in seeing more of her work.

I used to work at a restaurant that served these really good fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. They were made pretty regularly, so you'd never get a cookie that was more than an hour or two old. Despite this someone would inevitably ask for some fresh out of the oven. The problem with this was twofold:

  1. They took nearly 15 minutes to bake, way longer than anyone was willing to wait.

  2. If you know anything about baking soft chewy cookies, when they come out of the oven they are basically just molten goo, we had to wait 10 minutes before we were even allowed to take them off the pan.

So, we'd always tell people these things, and at least a couple times a week, someone would demand we do it anyway, and call the manager when we handed them a hot bag of cookie goo 15 minutes later. The restaurant eventually got rid of those cookies for something that was pre-made that tasted like Dollar Store cookies.

I thought about this a lot during the height of the Covid Pandemic, and every time a politician disagrees with a scientist about climate change. Anyway, welcome to Dollar Store Planet.

@quadrivial @RickiTarr Writing as an economist (or as I prefer to say "dismal scientist"), a huge part of the field is "go and work for a government and produce justifications for what they're going to do anyway". This does not help the reputation of the field, but does pay a lot.
