Posting about where the fediverse is and should be going, how we can put people back in the center of their technology. Also wondering where we are taking this planet.

@davidpierce at the Verge describes what makes the #fediverse so interesting extremely well. Go read this.

So Threads is starting to connect to Mastodon and the many other applications in the Fediverse starting today.

It's a baby step, for sure, but others will follow.

Which social network will be the next to follow?

Great piece by @cstross on the relationship between and creating a worthwhile future, apparently delivered as a keynote yesterday.

If you could test just 10 things in the Fediverse on an ongoing basis, what would you test? What's most urgent?

What if you could test 100 things?

(For the non-geeks among us: this is a technical geek / protocol / standards conformance / interoperability question)

@philip @activitypubtestsuite how would you define “supported”?

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@blake @philip @activitypubtestsuite so you’d have a 3-valued range of support: yes, no, and falling back.

@benpate @activitypubtestsuite Right! Somewhere between returning error message payload in HTTP error responses, or logging things to the app's log or the system log, if it is reasonably easy to get at ... I agree!

About half of the Fediverse addresses typed by FediForum attendees into the session notes are missing the leading "@".

People typed in their very own Fediverse handles. And because they came to FediForum, it's very likely they are very well acquainted with the right syntax.

Pretty strong circumstantial evidence that most people won't be able to distinguish Fediverse handles from e-mail addresses.

I have long believed that they should be the same.

And I thought only the can’t keep it’s Like counts and Follower counts and comment threads synchronized across instances.

Earlier today I looked at the “general” Matrix room of the Fediverse Developer Network, and it had just something like 40 people in it. Where did they all go? But all false alarm. Just now, I use the same app to look at the same number, and it’s back at 147, roughly where I thought it was.

Imho none of this is acceptable, never mind technical difficulties.

A few weeks ago I asked about Fediverse apps that are as unlike as Mastodon as possible. People pointed me to some quite interesting ones, like playing chess over ActivityPub or public transport delay announcements https://social.coop/@J12t/110843539252937792

Today I hear that is working on decentralized merge requests over ! If this comes into being, this could be a really major development for the . https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/-/epics/11247

This spreadsheet is extremely strong evidence for the amazing amount of innovation that is happening in the .

The variety and choice of apps that we have here is unheard of (and impossible!) in today's centralized social media products. And this is just Mastodon!

Next time you talk about the fediverse, in addition to no ads, no tracking, no crazy billionaires, and all the other points we tend to make, also say: and there's a lot more innovation.

P.S. Karissa: get your Fediverse handle listed on your Engadget page?

I’m starting a Lemmy group to collect mainstream press coverage of the Fediverse, ActivityPub and the like. When you see an article on a news site or such, consider submitting it there?

The idea is to “crowdsource” a repository of what the world says about us in mainstream outlets that have a significant audience.

@schmidt_fu @fediversenews I left the language tag unspecified on the Fediverse Press Lemmy group ... I think we solve that problem if nobody can read more than 10% of the posted articles. In the meantime, the more languages, the merrier!

@J12t@social.coop avatar

@weirdwriter I'm not attempting to make a statement about whether blogs or mainstream press are more credible / useful / ... on this subject. It's just that I'm interested what the mainstream press writes, and I figure maybe others are, too, that's all.

Consider two scenarios to add the next 10m monthly active users to today's #fediverse:

  1. we all block #meta and today's fediverse grows organically by the next 10m users.

  2. we interact with as many #meta users as possible from Mastodon etc. via their ActivityPub integration, make our points why this is better, and convince 10m of them to leave meta and come over to apps not run by a surveillance capitalist.

Which of those two is more likely and quickly to lead to success? Food for thought.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@nemobis good question. But consider: what are your top-3 arguments for people leaving mastodon.social? What would be your top-3 arguments for people leaving meta? Compare and contrast?

J12t, to random
@J12t@social.coop avatar

One of the core of the is reciprocity.

Meaning, for example, that you permit me to follow you with any software I like. And so I permit you to follow me with any software you like. It wouldn’t feel right if we didn’t reciprocate.

I can comment on your stuff. You can comment on my stuff. (Unless one of us gets abusive, for example, then reciprocity ends.)

Perhaps this is a lens we can use to tell whether is participating in good faith or not.
