Faceman2K23, to piracy in Can I override Sonarr season numbers

Mine does that for futurama, but I just manually import that as they release.

My sonarr has handled disenchantment fine, the files it grabbed are s5exx but they imported automatically as s3exx just fine. I didn’t have to do anything.

Faceman2K23, to selfhosted in How do you keep your home servers online during powercuts?
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I have 2 UPS’s, a small one that runs the fibre gear and keeps the connection alive and the main one in the rack that keeps the main server running for a couple of hours.

I’ve only ever had 1 power outage in the last 5 years though and it was scheduled electrical work. couple of brownouts during storms that were just barely deep enough to kick in the UPS boost for a minute but nothing major. nothing else is critical enough to worry about it in my case.

but if I were in a place where power is patchy, I’d have enough solar+battery for the whole house to last a normal day/night cycle, then a UPS for the rack, then a generator as a last resort only.

Faceman2K23, to android in Ethernet speed on S22?
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Could be a bad cable, one dodgy wire in an ethernet cable will drop you to 100mbit link speed, or it could be that your adaptor isnt actually gigabit, or the port you are plugging into isn’t gigabit.

I’ve used a USB3 Ethernet adaptor on a Samsung Note9 and a Fold3 and both supported the full gigabit sync with the expected speeds for a cheap usb ethernet controller.

I used to SSH into my server and proxy out from there. Then I learned how shit of a solution that is for daily use and set up a vpn like a normal person.

Faceman2K23, to selfhosted in Amount of RJ45 Ports on Home Server?
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I have 6 ports on my main server and I used to use them all just because I could, but I only really use 3 these days.

1x 10gbe for file server access, plex, downloaders, nextcloud etc.

1x 1gbe for DNS (Adguard Home), home automation stuff, web hosting, etc etc.

1x 1gbe for VMs

I could do them all with one 10gbe and split out subnets with Vlans in software, but I like dedicated connections where possible as it is easier to manage and monitor.

If you are looking to run a plex or jellyfin server it is usually best to use a dedicated player for those (nvidia shield, apple Tv, chromecast GTV etc…) as they always tend to have better support for things like multiple HDR formats and things like Atmos or DTSX compared to running a DIY HTPC box.

Faceman2K23, to piracy in jellyfin with subtitles on Chromecast
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i don’t know too much about jellyfin compatibility, but your issue is probably ASS/SSA format subtitles, which are a complex graphical overlay subtitle, rather than simple text so device support is less guaranteed.

You could try pre-burning the subtitles in before hand by re-encoding the video, or find content with SRT subtitles which have wider support.

ASS on android clients is mostly a solved issue these days so as the other commenter suggests, the google TV chromecast with a native jellyfin app would be a more reliable solution for you.

Then get some higher end Teflon ones, they last much longer than stock. or get generic glass circle pads, available as small round blanks that can be fit to any mouse.

Mine seem not available any more, they were a cheap chinese copy so might not have stayed in business.

I just searched glass mx master 3 pads and there were some available online.

Faceman2K23, to piracy in Re-Encode Advice?
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

That will be down to your GPU having hardware acceleration for certain codecs and not others, because a pure CPU encode of those codecs on anything but an Epyc or other ball tot he wall top end CPU is going to take hours.

my last 4 or 5 computer builds have been Asus motherboards and i;ve had great luck with them, and my mini-pcs are all Asus PN50/51 Ryzen based NUC-alikes, they are excellent. I use one as my main workstation modded into a fanless case.

I feel like their quality slipped lately however, might be part of their cost cutting before they restructured recently. will have to keep an eye on how they do in the future.

For ultra-budget laptops however, I lean towards Lenovo they have been so good to me over the years.

I have a few Mikrotik switches mixed in with my Unifi rig, they are excellent bang for buck, well featured, easy to program and have a huge model selection covering basically every possible use case.

I’ve been using MX masters since the first model, my only gripe however is I always wear through the thumb pad button well before the rest of the mouse is showing any wear, the rubber was just not up to scratch. All of my 2s’s have a hole cut in the rubber there to get to the button below just to make it work.

The 3s that I have a couple of are pretty sturdy and seem to wear much better in that regard, and the metal scrollwheel on that model is better too as it doesn’t have rubber to wear out and go gummy either.

The stock pads always wear out super fast too, so I put glass on one of them and it’s been a game changer.

Faceman2K23, to worldnews in Japan wrestles with its views on ‘outside people’ amid population crisis
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

There is definitely a positive to not treating a home as an appreciating asset that’s for sure… but the point of my rant is that it can go too far and you end up with a different type of housing crisis where there are plenty of cheap homes to go around, but nobody wants them.

The proper way to calm the housing crisis in the west is to heavily disincentivise the mass acquisition of property as an investment, through strong taxation and fees that increase with every property purchased and funnel that money to first home buyers, new construction, and overhauling zoning laws. hell, you could go as far as to put a hard cap on how many separate properties any person or entity can own for the next 10 years… force that market to cool by squeezing the top.

An average 4 bedroom family home in the suburbs should never be 20-30x the average salary, that’s ridiculous. the market needs to crash in order to recover to a state where a normal person can pay off a mortgage at an affordable rate in 15 to 20 years, not 30 or even 50 as we are seeing in some areas. property should still be an appreciating asset, but not one that is able to be hoarded en masse.

The whole ideology of nimbyism has to die too, protecting your investment at the detriment of the greater good holds us all back. that’s another thing that is mostly non-existant in japan, there is no investment to protect in a lot of cases, so there is no backlash when the government or council want to change something nearby or build a block of cheap apartments nearby. If you vote for your local government and they say they will build a train station here, and a subsidised housing block there, you cant complain, it is for the greater good.

Sorry I like to rant and tend to ramble about topics I find interesting.

I just think it is an interesting example of what happens when homes are not treated as a valuable investment, as the opposite of the western view. both can be equally damaging and the balance in the middle is extremely difficult to maintain. you can have plenty of houses nobody can afford, or plenty of affordable houses that nobody wants.
