For God's Sake

In the decipherment of man's enigma,
my moves defy the algorithms,
embracing his ethereal origin,
a being misplaced
in this three-dimensional prison.

Whee! Happy book birthday to ECHOES OF WAR by Kristine Smith. Jani Kilian is back!

An adversary she thought vanquished has returned, and dangers Jani Kilian once faced could return to claim everything—and everyone—she loves.

This is both a very readable introduction to, and a fascinating systematic taxonomy of spec-fic genres. Fun to read and very informative.

I picked this up at Fantasycon to see whether I wanted to subscribe. It’s superb! It’s hard to pick a single standout story, but I loved ‘The Alien Invasion’ by Ely Percy, and ‘Space’ by John Buchan (‘author of ‘The 39 Steps’). @shorelineofinfinity #sf #sciencefiction #shortstories #bookstodon @bookstodon

The heart of this collection is an excoriating and hilarious satirical novella about the post-war American comics industry, but my favourite was ‘Hypothetical Lizard’, a stunningly beautiful queer secondary-world fantasy.

Delivered by Signor Postino while I was at work today: a treat I got myself (Niall Harrison‘s book of reviews) and birthday gifts from my dear friend, the lovely Al Lindsay

The Diemen Alexander by Marie Hietz has just been released! Set in Hobart, it's SF featuring zoology, comparative anatomy and venture capitalism. It also explores the ethics of human responsibility towards animals, the earth and each other, and the truth that power goes to the person most prepared to wield it.

Described as "Jurassic Park meets ET - in the best possible way.’

Crossing Raukawa Moana next week to visit Te Wai Pounamu. Lots of reading time, so loading up on a theme. Cats are evil mass murderers, so @scalzi s Starter Villain & Tom Mead's Murder Wheel are both apt, and the unique ancient fauna of needs to be saved from them, so KPS also fits.

There's a problem with "Starter Villain" though. How could anyone claim that the idea of cats as macchiavellian murderous managers is FICTION? 🤔

This quotation, written in the context of a discussion of language in worldbuilding, helps me to understand why I find it necessary to construct languages myself.

Sooo excited to see this book nearing its day in the spotlight! Kaisa was a delight to supervise as a PhD student, and we had so many wonderful conversations about things while she was writing.

Yay, I just finished the third chapter of my #SF novel, in which my washed-up protagonist is found in a dank London pub and called back to duty with the offer of just revenge.

This writing-in-the-morning thing is certainly working for me. 😊

I hope you’re all having success with your own writing goals as well. :blobcatcoffee:
