Self-Aware Robots: On the Path to Machine Consciousness

This book focuses on the research and development in the field of self-aware robots. Its theme is artificial consciousness, a field that covers both artificial intelligence and robotics, and includes philosophy, psychology, the study of biological evolution, physiology, and medicine, especially brain neuroscience and neuropsychiatry.

After watching Foundation I was curious about Asimov's Robot books.

The stories so far (I Robot and The Rest of the Robots) are quite simple and a bit crude, but they are also refreshing in their simplicity.

I see the stories as Asimov's take on the advances in robotics and computing he witnessed. It's funny in a way that the robot themes in science fiction haven't changed all that much since then.

86: A bittersweet SciFi Anime

🚨🚨🚨 Spoilers‼️ 🚨🚨🚨

https://youtu.be/VSdS29SDvn4

I briefly mentioned 86 on @darnelltv (regarding killer robots), but 86 (which can be watched on Crunchyroll) is a diamond 💎 in the rough, whose story at best can be described as bittersweet.

The story has an “Eastern European” feel to it, & at first glance, it seems as if this is a misplaced drama where robot drones fight other robot drones from rival nations.

However, what is revealed is that the Republic of San Magnolia forced those born with colored hair to fight on the front lines against a hostile robot/cybernetic army (you will understand why I call it robot/cybernetic once you progress further through the series).

While the silver-haired citizens enjoy the highlights of life, their colored-haired former neighbors are dying awful deaths against a mechanical foe they know little about.

This is an emotionally disturbing anime, so I would not recommend children watching it (there is not much gore, but there is a lot of death in the show).

Racism & discrimination are significant themes of 86, but it does showcase a redemptive side that is revealed towards the end (you will like it).

If you are into serious, political SciFi war dramas, then this anime is definitely for you!

📝 Pro- notes... and industrial

📌 Industrial robots today are programmed to perform specific and repetitive tasks, which limits their versatility; to make them perform different actions, they need to be reprogrammed by a person.

📌 Incorporating into industrial could enable them to learn autonomously from their own actions and the environment; they would thus learn to perform diversified tasks and decide in real-time which task to carry out.

📌 Developing -integrated capable of adapting and learning is no small challenge, especially for complex and dynamic work environments; one of the critical aspects is that robots can cause significant damage, including harm to people, if not properly controlled.

🤔 If industrial were to become capable of autonomous learning and real-time , what are the ethical implications of granting them a degree of decision-making autonomy? How should we manage on a legal level the for actions taken by such robots?

🤔 of this kind could reduce the need for human in certain tasks and industries. What implications could arise? How should we rethink the right to ? What actions should and training institutions take today to prepare tomorrow's workers for a like this?

🤔 Considering that these can cause severe harm, how should the responsibilities of and developers be distributed in ensuring and control of such machines? What kinds of technologies and approaches should we develop to prevent accidents or abuses arising from their autonomy? How should we rethink the concept of safety in the ?

🤔 What will happen to that cannot keep up with this if it gains traction? On what other aspects can those businesses focus their competitive advantage, and how should we reimagine the very idea of competitive advantage in a world where industrial can learn and work autonomously? What kind of technological and divide might arise from these innovations?
